SUMMARY:Village Talk - Native Americans and Archaeology in Marin County
DESCRIPTION:This talk addresses the Native American history of Marin County using archaeology\, historical documents\, and ethnohistory. After exploring the communities and cultural practices of indigenous Coast Miwok people who lived in the area we now call China Camp State Park for thousands of years\, the talk details some the challenges facing Native people during the period of Spanish missionization\, as well as the remarkable story of Native resiliency. Learn how Coast Miwok survived the missions and maintained connections to their culture\, families\, and homes. \nBio – Tsim Schneider is assistant professor of anthropology at UC Santa Cruz. He has a Ph.D. from UC Berkeley and his continuing archaeological and historical research in Marin County investigates the interactions between Native Americans and colonial institutions. Tsim is co-editor of Indigenous Landscapes and Spanish Missions: New Perspectives from Archaeology and Ethnohistory (University of Arizona Press). \nSpace is limited and reservations are required.
