SUMMARY:Park Champions Work Day
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a day of trail repairs. We’ll be continuing our work on Shoreline Trail\, rebuilding it to state standards\, compacting the tread\, replacing split rail fencing and wattling the edge. The work will be moderately strenuous\, and we’ll be working around large equipment. \nLunch is provided. Limited free camping is available to registered volunteers. Ages 16 and up are welcome. Volunteers under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. \n\n  \nTo register\, please go to the California State Parks Foundation website. Once you are registered\, they will send additional information about where to meet\, what to bring (in addition to your smiles and volunteer spirit) and what to wear. Your registration helps us prepare for equipment\, supplies and\, of course\, food. Be sure to include your email address…just in case rain causes us to cancel and we need to contact you. \nJoin us and meet new people who\, like you\, care about our parks. To get a flavor of our work day events see the FOCC Maintenance photo gallery.

SUMMARY:Indigenous Miwok Walk
DESCRIPTION:Oct 19th \nHonoring Native Californians: \nMiwok Life at China Camp\nJohn Tayaba of the Miwok tribe performs with other dancers during the annual Indigenous People’s Thanksgiving Sunrise Ceremony on Alcaraz Island. 2007. AP Photo/Craig Young\n  \nThis walk is a continuation of a previous Miwok program from August. eIndigenous coastal Miwok people have lived and thrived in the China Camp area for over 5000 years. Before Spanish settlers forced the native population off of their land and into missions\, the Miwok people flourished due to an abundance of food and natural materials from the oak woodland forest and the coastal bay shoreline. It is estimated that there were over several thousand Coastal Miwok in the North Bay at the time of the Spanish arrival in 1769. Most of this population was dispersed within 100 years. Many died of European diseases. Miwok people still live in the Bay Area today\, with the largest group at Graton Rancheria in Sonoma County. Join naturalist Jerry Coe for an educational walk as he discusses the pre-colonial settlements of the coastal Miwok people at China Camp. He will cover how they lived\, what they wore and ate\, what they used for medicine\, and some of their common cultural traditions and folklore.  \n  \n Date: October 19th \nTime: 10am-noon  \nLocation:  Backranch Meadows Entrance Gate. \n  \nThis event is free. Space is limited and reservations are required. \nTo reserve\, send email to: \nchinacamp.programs@gmail.com or call (415) 456-0766. \nInclude your name\, the number of seats you need\, and your phone #. \nWe will reply to confirm your reservation. \nCancellation announcements will be posted on the FOCC website homepage.

SUMMARY:Speaker Series: The First Chinese Woman to Vote
DESCRIPTION:10/19 Speaker Series\nThe Story of Tye Leung:\n The First Chinese Woman to Vote\n\nJoin us to explore the fascinating history of Tye Leung\, the very first Chinese American woman to become a federal civil servant at the famous Angel Island Immigration Station and the first Chinese American woman to ever vote in a US presidential election. Ted Schulze will trace the life of Tye\, from her infamous days among San Francisco’s Barbary Coast to her quiet life as a loving grandmother. Schulze will also look at the life of her husband Charles Schulze\, whose father came from Europe to seek his fortune in a tiny Nevada mining town. Her story is also one of forbidden love\, as her illegal interracial marriage compromised her and her white husband’s government career. That did not stop Tye and her husband\, Charles\, from having a loving marriage with 4 children\, and a continued series of fascinating experiences. Tye was an advocate for women’s rights and she is a designated Women’s History Month Honoree by the National Women’s History Project. \nTed Schulze is Tye’s grandson\, and has done considerable research on Leung’s life\, family history\, and accomplishments. Schulze is recently retired from Xerox and is a dedicated member of the FOCC Trail Crew and a proud to volunteer of the Topside Animal Care crew at The Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito. He lives with his wife Amy\, in San Rafael.  \n  \n  \n  \nDate: Saturday\, October 19th  \nTime: 6pm – 7pm \nLocation: China Camp Village Museum\, China Camp State Park \n  \n$5 fee.
