SUMMARY:Birding walk: swallows show up in force
DESCRIPTION:They swoop. They zoom. They flitter\, squeak\, and chur. They are the lively and chatty swallows of spring\, which arrive this month. We’ll be on the lookout—with eyes and ears—for our three most common species. Tree swallows\, which tend to nest in tree cavities\, cruise above the meadows and marshes in search of flying insects. Violet-green swallows\, which nest in tree hollows as well as cliff areas\, might also be on the wing\, along with barn swallows\, easily identified by their deeply forked tails.\n \nIn addition to these seasonal visitors\, we’ll have time to talk about habitats\, and why they are a critical factor in bird identification. Join naturalist Jerry Coe as he shares tips on spotting species\, and how they contribute to China Camp’s ecosystem. \nBinoculars highly recommended. Space is limited; registration is required. Cancellations notified via email. \nDate: Saturday\, April 18\nTime: 8 a.m. – 10 a.m.\nLocation: Turtle Back Nature Trail trailhead\nDifficulty: easy (mostly flat 2-mile walk)\nCost: free to FOCC members; $5 donation appreciated for non-members\nAges: 8 and older; under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult \nRESERVE NOW

SUMMARY:Pitch in for Earth Day
DESCRIPTION:As a nature lover\, you probably know about Earth Day\, the springtime celebration focusing on environmental protection and how you can help. At state parks in California\, Earth Day is celebrated throughout April\, with volunteer events taking place at many of the state’s 280 parks\, including China Camp. \nOn Saturday\, April 11\, China Camp will host two volunteer projects to enhance and improve the park. The event is cosponsored by the California Sate Parks Foundation (CSPF). Volunteers will head out in the field\, removing invasive Scotch and French broom\, which crowd out native plants\, harm wildlife habitat\, alter soil chemistry\, and increase the risk of destructive wildfire. Skilled volunteers will also be able to help in our major effort to repair historic structures at China Camp Village. \nThis is a great event for all\, including families with teens age 14 and older. Lunch will be provided to all registrants. Free camping at our Back Ranch Meadows Campground will be available (registered participants only). To register (required)\, visit the CSPF website. \nSpace is limited; registration is required. Cancellations notified via email. \nDate: Saturday\, April 18\nTime: 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.\nLocation: China Camp Village upper parking lot\nDifficulty: moderately strenuous\nAges: 14 and older; under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult \nRESERVE NOW
