SUMMARY:Frogs\, Newts and Other Amphibians - a talk by David Herlocker
DESCRIPTION:There’s no better time than January to encounter frogs and toads and newts and other salamanders on the trails of China Camp and other Marin parks. For now is the time these ancient animals called “amphibians” come out of their dry season hiding places. \nThe story of their survival for over 300 million years\, and the strategies that allow many to thrive in our forests\, fields and streams\, will be the subject of this month’s illustrated talk in the China Camp Village museum. It will be presented by David Herlocker\, an award-winning Interpretive Naturalist for Marin County Parks. \nDavid has been a lifelong lover of amphibians and has taught about them in the classroom and in the field for over 30 years.  He will delve into the identifying characteristics and natural history of our local species\, and how we can be better stewards of their habitats. And he will discuss the two species that have suffered most from habitat alteration and are now listed as threatened and endangered. \nThis is the fourth in a monthly series of free illustrated talks at the museum designed to appeal to the whole family. Did you know that mushrooms are vital for healthy ecosystems\, help maintain bio-diversity and are being used for medicines\, soil amendments\, vegan leather and more? \nCome find out more about the versatile\, impressive and fascinating world of mushrooms at this month’s illustrated talk\, “Mushrooms and Their Many Uses.” The talk will be presented by Enrique Sanchez. \nMr. Sanchez has been an active member of the Mycological Society of San Francisco for 15 years.  A lifelong interest in herbs passed on by his grandmother led him to explore what else in the natural world could be beneficial for humans.  This curiosity led him to bio-dynamic farming\, bee keeping and mushrooms. DESCRIPTION:As many of you know\, we had to cancel our work day last week due to the weather and the resulting condition of the trails. This is short notice to recruit for volunteers\, but we are hopeful that you will join us on Saturday\, April 1st to help us install split rail fencing. We will be blocking access to one trail\, until the proper sustainable repairs can be made. We will also be installing fencing to provide safe passage on other trails. It will be a full day of work from 9AM – 3PM. Lunch is included. Limited shared free camp sites are available for our registered volunteers. Volunteers will be working with posthole diggers\, shovels\, McLeods\, tampers\, digging bars\, wheelbarrows\, buckets and other hand tools. \nTo register\, go to the Cal Parks Champion website. DESCRIPTION:Spring is an amazing time to experience the wonders of wildflowers and to gain an appreciation of the value of native plants. \nWe are honored to have Doreen Smith\, member of the Marin County Native Plant Society\, as our April speaker at the Village Museum. Doreen will present a slideshow and talk about the more familiar wildflowers of Marin\, with an emphasis on those growing at China Camp State Park. \nDoreen is well known for her expertise on the native flora of the county\, and has spent many decades identifying and updating the local wildflower species lists on behalf of the Marin chapter of the California Native Plant Society. She also worked as a taxonomist at the Herbarium of the Royal Botanic Gardens\, Kew\, England and more recently at the California Academy of Sciences\, San Francisco\, preparing the newer edition of Howell’s Marin Flora. SUMMARY:Earth Day at China Camp
DESCRIPTION:FOCC\, in partnership with the California State Parks Association\, will hold our second Earth Day event. This year’s focus is restoration and clean up\, which couldn’t be more perfect. As a result of the persistent storms and excessive rain\, we have plenty of trail restoration that needs to be done. \n  \nThe volunteer trail event check in and morning snacks begin at 8:30\, and the work is from 9AM to 12:30PM. A lunch is provided compliments of Panera Bread.\nWe’d love to have you join us for a day in the dirt. To register\, go to the CalParks website. Your registration helps us plan for tools\, supplies and food. CalParks will contact you with information about where to meet\, what to wear and what to bring (in addition to your Earth Day smile). After lunch\, volunteers are welcome to continue the trail work with FOCC core trail maintenance team. Hint: there is much to be done.\nThere will be crafts for children in the Village from 1:30 to 4:00\, including animal tracks\, Zodiac signs on Chinese Newspapers and face painting. There is a $5 parking fee\, unless you have an annual pass. No preregistration is needed\, just drop in. \n  \nNature Hikes will be offered at 1:30 and 3:00. SUMMARY:Our Nesting Neighbors: bird watching walk
DESCRIPTION:  \nSpring is an active time of year for birds as they are nesting in trees\, bushes\, cavities\, and open terrain. During this leisurely stroll in the park\, we’ll be on the lookout for our resident and migratory nesting birds as diverse as Western Bluebirds\, Tree Swallows\, Wilson’s Warblers\, Killdeer\, California Quail and Woodpeckers. We will delve into migration\, calls\, songs and nesting behavior. \nSharon Barnett enthusiastically shares her passion and sense of wonder with others\, especially children.  Well known to children as “Sharon Heron”\, Sharon has taught environmental education for over 15 years in Marin County and internationally. She has volunteered with many organizations including The Marine Mammal Center\, SPAWN\, and served as Director for Marin Audubon Society and The River Otter Ecology Project. Sharon teaches science at Marin Country Day School and is the Hiking Marin Trails Instructor for College of Marin.  She designs and leads programs for Point Reyes Field Institute\, Marin Nature Adventures and volunteers for Point Reyes National Seashore Association. SUMMARY:Village Talk - Native Americans and Archaeology in Marin County
DESCRIPTION:This talk addresses the Native American history of Marin County using archaeology\, historical documents\, and ethnohistory. After exploring the communities and cultural practices of indigenous Coast Miwok people who lived in the area we now call China Camp State Park for thousands of years\, the talk details some the challenges facing Native people during the period of Spanish missionization\, as well as the remarkable story of Native resiliency. Learn how Coast Miwok survived the missions and maintained connections to their culture\, families\, and homes. \nBio – Tsim Schneider is assistant professor of anthropology at UC Santa Cruz. He has a Ph.D. from UC Berkeley and his continuing archaeological and historical research in Marin County investigates the interactions between Native Americans and colonial institutions. DESCRIPTION:This month’s talk will focus on the intricacies of common reptile and amphibian species found in the North Bay Area.  This talk will also address the accuracy and efforts of volunteers using citizen science smartphones as tools to document herpetofauna abundances. Learn how you can help design a cover board study at China Camp using your smartphone as a research tool to document the organisms observed using this fun method. Feel free to sign up for an iNaturalist.org account in advance if possible and download the free software application. The general public including naturalists\, teachers\, students and newcomers are all welcome to join. \nJulie Wittmann is a credentialed science teacher who received an MS in Biology at Sonoma State University and BS in Wildlife Conservation Biology at UC Davis. Julie’s research focuses on the impacts of microgeographic features and changing seasonal climate variables on the phenology of local amphibian and reptile species in the North Bay Area. DESCRIPTION:We’re taking a break from trail building this month\, and trying to get the maintenance yard in order.  We will be splitting logs\, cutting up old split rail fencing\, bundling wood for firewood to sell\, dismantling or cutting up junk that has been left or deposited in the park and filling dumpsters. Chain saws\, wood splitters\, hammers\, handsaws and small tools will be used. \nSign up at the California State Parks Foundation website.  The usual CSPF regs apply: minimum age 16\, and anyone under 18 years who attends a Park Champions event must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

The Trail Partners (Marin Conservation League\, MCBC and Marin Horse Council) have been setting up Slow and Say Hello outposts at popular trailheads around the county. The purpose of the Slow and Say Hello campaign is to remind the many visitors who recreate on Marin’s open space\, watershed and park lands of the importance of trail safety\, courtesy toward other visitors\, and respect for the plants and wildlife that inhabit them. “Slow and Say Hello” simply asks that we communicate with each other on the trail with a simple “Hi”\, wave or ring of the bell — to acknowledge our shared responsibility. \nOn September 16th\, 2017 the Trail Partners will engage park visitors on China Camp’s trails with a trail quiz that includes questions about park rules and behavior that promotes safety and resource protection. \n

This presentation will dispel these and other harmful beliefs that can and have lead to the unnecessary destruction of colonies and roosts. These shy creatures are actually of great importance to humans and ecological systems. SUMMARY:Champion Workday: Repair Shoreline!
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Champion trail maintenance event on Saturday\, September 23rd from 9AM to 3PM. We are seeking strong\, energetic volunteers. This is the most ambitious maintenance event we have done to date. It will be strenuous. We will be toting rock and gravel\, assembling Gabion baskets\, shoring up a bridge\, excavating the footing for the Gabions\, putting in drainage and a variety of other tasks associated with building the Gabion basket stone wall. \nThis volunteer event will kick off the repair. The California Conservation Corps (CCC) will follow on to continue and complete the lion’s share of the work. We expect them to start their work a few days after our workday. However\, they are also on-call to assist with the wildfires. If they are called\, this will delay the repair. This has been a difficult season for fires. We will hope for the best. \nTo participate\, please register on the California State Parks Foundation website. They will contact you with information about where to meet\, what to wear\, what to bring\, etc. Registration is essential to our planning for tools\, supplies\, equipment and\, of course\, food. \nBring your ‘Can do’ attitudes\, a team spirit and a sense of humor\, the essentials for a grand success!
