SUMMARY:February Bird Walk: Early migrants
DESCRIPTION:It’s a relatively quiet time at the park in February\, with most birds still at their wintering grounds to the south. But as early spring begins to unfold\, the first migratory birds will start to return to China Camp\, and we’ll be on the lookout for them on this month’s birding hike.  \nTypically\, the first migrants to arrive are two similar-looking species: violet-green swallows and tree swallows. These insect-eaters with iridescent green and blue backs are easiest to spot swooping and turning in the air above the park’s broad meadows. As we walk\, we’ll talk about how to identify birds in the field using four key factors—size and shape\, overall color\, behavior\, and habitat. China Camp offers six different habitats and we will discuss the advantages of each. \nSturdy walking shoes are required. Dress in layers for changeable weather. DESCRIPTION:Whooooo wants to learn more about owls? If you give a hoot about these spectacular (mostly) nocturnal raptors\, mark your calendar for a very special afternoon event at China Camp. \nAll About Owls\, a nonprofit based in Petaluma\, will bring two of their “ambassador owls” to this event. We’ll meet Gazeau\, a female great horned owl who\, fell from her nest in Oregon when young\, permanently injuring her right wing. We’ll also meet Buho\, a male Western screech owl found in Sonoma. Buho has a damaged optic nerve and permanently dilated pupil that makes it impossible for him to hunt effectively. \nLearn more about Gazeau\, Buho\, and other local owl species and why they are so important in our ecosystem. You’ll also learn what you can do to reduce threats to owls and help them thrive in the wild. Be on time to make sure you don’t miss the owls. SUMMARY:Owl meet-and-greet with All About Owls
DESCRIPTION:Last month we had huge interest in this very special program\, so we are offering it again this month. All About Owls\, a nonprofit based in Petaluma\, will bring two of their “ambassador owls” to the Village Museum for this afternoon event. Owl experts will also share fascinating facts about owls in an info-packed presentation. We’ll meet Gazeau\, a female great horned owl who\, fell from her nest in Oregon when young\, injuring her right wing. She was taken to a wildlife hospital\, but the damage couldn’t be completely repaired\, leaving her unable fend for herself in the wild. So\, in 2013\, she became an ambassador for All About Owls. We’ll also meet Buho\, a male Western screech owl found in Sonoma. Buho has a damaged optic nerve and permanently dilated pupil that makes it impossible for him to hunt effectively. Buho became an ambassador in 2014. \nLearn more about Gazeau and Buho\, and other local owl species and why they are so important in our ecosystem. You’ll also learn what you can do to reduce threats to owls and help them thrive in the wild. Be on time to make sure you don’t miss the presentation or the owls in what’s sure to be a popular event. \nSpace is limited; registration required. Overlooking the sparkling waters of San Pablo Bay\, we will convene at China Camp Point and enjoy a clear view of the “Worm moon” as it rises over the East Bay hills. This month’s moon is believed to get its name from earthworms which often emerge after spring rains. Some experts say it’s more likely refers to types of beetle larvae\, not earthworms\, which emerge in spring. \nHike lead and natural history docent Harold Hirsch will share fascinating facts about the science\, cultural significance\, and history of the moon and the spring equinox. DESCRIPTION:DUE TO PREDICTED RAIN\, THIS EVENT HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED TO APRIL 27. Don your work gloves and join the weed-yanking brigade with Friends of China Camp and the San Pedro Road Coalition. We’ll help clear China Camp’s east entrance by removing invasive broom and other flammable weeds and plant debris. Backed by the San Rafael Fire Department\, our goal is to protect native biodiversity with the added benefit of reducing fuel sources for catastrophic wildfires. Armed with weed wrenches and good ole elbow grease\, we’ll uproot unwelcome intruders. NOTE: This can be strenuous work but you can proceed at your own pace. Any help is welcome! \nWear long pants\, a long-sleeve shirt\, and hiking boots or other sturdy\, close-toed shoes. Bring work gloves\, a filled water bottle\, and sunscreen. We’ll follow a winding trail beneath a canopy of oaks to learn about budding blooms\, chirping baby birds\, and other signs of spring. Through hands-on exploration and guided activities\, Junior Rangers will forge a connection with nature\, fostering a lifelong love for the natural world while becoming stewards of our precious ecosystems. SUMMARY:Sunrise-and-Wildflower Hike
DESCRIPTION:Are you as excited as we are for our next sunrise hike? Watch the morning sun cast a golden glow over China Camp’s wetlands\, then search for wildflower gems with fellow hikers. Naturalist Harold Hirsch will point out some of the springtime beauties\, such as irises\, suncups\, and star lilies.  \nWear sturdy shoes and dress in layers for this early morning ramble. Bring a filled water bottle\, a camera or smartphone\, and hiking poles if desired. (We’ll be heading down one short\, steep slope.)
