SUMMARY:February Bird Walk: Early migrants
DESCRIPTION:It’s a relatively quiet time at the park in February\, with most birds still at their wintering grounds to the south. But as early spring begins to unfold\, the first migratory birds will start to return to China Camp\, and we’ll be on the lookout for them on this month’s birding hike.  \nTypically\, the first migrants to arrive are two similar-looking species: violet-green swallows and tree swallows. These insect-eaters with iridescent green and blue backs are easiest to spot swooping and turning in the air above the park’s broad meadows. As we walk\, we’ll talk about how to identify birds in the field using four key factors—size and shape\, overall color\, behavior\, and habitat. China Camp offers six different habitats and we will discuss the advantages of each. \nSturdy walking shoes are required. Dress in layers for changeable weather. Bring a full water bottle and snacks. \nDate: Saturday\, February 17  \nTime: 8 a.m. – 10 a.m. \nLocation: Turtle Back Nature Trail trailhead \nDifficulty: Easy\, 2-mile walk \nCost: Free for FOCC members ($5 donation appreciated for non-members) \nAges: 12 and up (under age 18 must be accompanied by parent or responsible adult) \nADA Accessible: No \nREGISTER NOW   \nPhoto: tree swallows by Jerry Coe/FOCC volunteer

SUMMARY:SPECIAL EVENT: Owl meet-and-greet and presentation
DESCRIPTION:Whooooo wants to learn more about owls? If you give a hoot about these spectacular (mostly) nocturnal raptors\, mark your calendar for a very special afternoon event at China Camp. \nAll About Owls\, a nonprofit based in Petaluma\, will bring two of their “ambassador owls” to this event. Buho has a damaged optic nerve and permanently dilated pupil that makes it impossible for him to hunt effectively. \nLearn more about Gazeau\, Buho\, and other local owl species and why they are so important in our ecosystem. You’ll also learn what you can do to reduce threats to owls and help them thrive in the wild. Be on time to make sure you don’t miss the owls. Registration is required; location details emailed with registration confirmation. \nDate: Saturday\, February 17  \nTime: 2 p.m. – 3 p.m. \nLocation: China Camp Village Museum  \nCost: Free for FOCC members\, $5 donation appreciated for non-members  \nAges: 6 and up  (under age 18 must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult) \nADA Accessible: Yes  \nREGISTER NOW  \n  \nPhotos: courtesy of All About Owls \n

SUMMARY:Naturalist’s Book Club: Most Delicious Poison
DESCRIPTION:Naturalist’s Book Club: Most Delicious Poison  \nNote: This is a change from a previously selected book for this month. \nIt is oft said that “you are what you eat.” But what are you if what you eat is toxic? Author Noah Whiteman’s Most Delicious Poison explores the unavoidable toxins we encounter day-to-day and how we have adapted to live with them. Whiteman is Professor of Evolutionary Biology at the University of California\, Berkeley. Join us for a discussion of his “intoxicating” new book. \nFrom the book’s website: \n“A deadly secret lurks within our spice racks\, medicine cabinets\, backyard gardens\, and private stashes… Based on cutting-edge science in the fields of evolution\, chemistry\, and neuroscience\, Most Delicious Poison reveals the origins of toxins produced by plants\, mushrooms\, microbes\, and even some animals\, the mechanisms that animals evolved to overcome them\, and how a co-evolutionary arms race made its way into the human experience. This perpetual chemical war not only drove the diversification of life on Earth\, but is also intimately tied to our own successes and failures. You will never look at a houseplant\, mushroom\, fruit\, vegetable\, or even the last 500 years of human history\, the same way again.” \nDate: Saturday\, February 25  \nTime: 7 p.m. – 8 p.m. \nLocation: Online meeting; details will be emailed with registration confirmation. \nAges: 14 and up \nREGISTER NOW

SUMMARY:Owl meet-and-greet with All About Owls
DESCRIPTION:Last month we had huge interest in this very special program\, so we are offering it again this month. All About Owls\, a nonprofit based in Petaluma\, will bring two of their “ambassador owls” to the Village Museum for this afternoon event. Owl experts will also share fascinating facts about owls in an info-packed presentation. SUMMARY:Junior Ranger Program
DESCRIPTION:The Birth of the Bay\nIn this fascinating and fun program\, Junior Rangers will uncover the mystery of how San Francisco Bay came to be. Our educators will take little ones on a magical journey back thousands of years\, to a time when the San Francisco Bay was a grassland river valley. Back then\, the region was home to roaming herds of 13-foot-tall Columbian mammoths and giant camels.  \nHow did these grasslands become a sprawling bay filled with animals? What mysterious forces formed China Camp’s present-day shoreline and tidal marshlands\, and how did it happen? We will explore answers to these questions and more as we explore China Camp’s shoreline. Dress in weather-appropriate clothing and bring snacks\, water\, a smile\, and a spirit of adventure. \nSpace is limited; registration required. Cancellations notified via email.  \n  \nDate: Saturday\, March 16 \nTime: 10 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.   \nLocation: China Camp Village \nDifficulty: easy\, ¾-mile walk \nCost: free to FOCC members; $5 donation appreciated for non-members \nAge: suitable for children ages 7 to 9 with a parent or responsible adult \nADA accessible: no \n  \nREGISTER NOW \n  \nPhoto: Columbian mammoths courtesy of the National Park Service

SUMMARY:Moonrise Astronomy Night—CANCELLED
DESCRIPTION:DUE TO WEATHER CONDITIONS\, THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED. Who better to celebrate the spring equinox with than with our nearest and dearest celestial friend\, the moon! Overlooking the sparkling waters of San Pablo Bay\, we will convene at China Camp Point and enjoy a clear view of the “Worm moon” as it rises over the East Bay hills. We’ll finish with a sweet treat: all the fixins for s’more “moon pies.” This stationary\, wheelchair-accessible\, family-friendly event welcomes all ages and abilities.  \nWear warm clothing for chilly evening weather.  \nSpace is limited; registration required. SUMMARY:Give-Back Morning at China Camp
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a morning making a difference in the park. Our weekly maintenance days tackle a host of jobs large and small\, so there’s something for everyone. You don’t need to be a weightlifter or a construction worker to help out\, in fact we’ve got men and women of all shapes\, sizes\, ages\, and abilities volunteering at the park. But there are things that our volunteers have in common: a willingness to pitch in and work together\, a healthy sense of humor\, and desire to help the park. \nWhether you’re a newbie or experienced\, pitch in to keep the park safe and beautiful. There’s no long-term commitment required—but we hope you come again. \nMeet promptly at 9 a.m. in the maintenance area next to China Camp Ranger Station (101 Peacock Gap Trail\, San Rafael). Bring work gloves and filled water bottles. Long pants and long-sleeve shirt with sturdy hiking shoes or boots recommended. Ages 14 and up (under age 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian). Please leave your four-legged friends at home\, as no pets are allowed on our trails. \nIf you are volunteering as a group of 5 or more\, please contact our team coordinator at kjsmead@comcast.net. This helps us plan for tools and supplies. \nCancellations will be posted on our events calendar.
