SUMMARY:BIRDING WALK: The height of fall migration
DESCRIPTION:October is the height of fall migration\, with birds moving south toward Central and South America. We’ll be on the lookout for migratory wetland species\, such as red knots. (In fact\, our new Motus Tower\, affixed to our campground kiosk\, can help you track what’s flying over the park.) In the forests and meadows\, we’ll be on the lookout for warblers and flycatchers before they depart for warmer climes. And we’ll try to spy local birds that overwinter here\, such as white-tailed kites and ospreys. Along the way\, we’ll explore how birds navigate using their remarkable senses and our planet’s magnetic field. \nSpace is limited; registration is required. Cancellation notified via email. \nDate: Saturday\, October 17\nTime: 8 a.m. – 10 a.m.\nLocation: Turtle Back Trail trailhead\nDifficulty: easy; mostly flat\, ¾-mile walk\nCost: free to FOCC members; $5 donation appreciated for non-members\nAges: 10 and up; under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult \nREGISTRATION \n Photo: Mike’s Birds/Wikimedia Commons

SUMMARY:FULL MOON HIKE: The Hunter's Moon
DESCRIPTION:It will be a month since the September equinox\, and the nights will have grown longer than the days\, inviting the spirits of old to revisit us. Drawing from ancient European traditions\, the annual rites of Halloween are near. \nHere at China Camp State Park\, Native American communities observed the movements and cycles of the full moon to mark the seasons\, the passage of time\, and cycles of renewal. Join us beneath the night sky as the ghostly “Hunter’s Moon” rises over the hills on the east side of San Francisco Bay\, rekindling our connection to the rhythms of the moon\, the land\, and the changing seasons. \nArrive by 4:30 p.m. Our hike will start promptly at 4:45 p.m. to catch the moonrise. Space is limited; registration is required. Cancellation notified via email. \nDate: Saturday\, October 24\nTime: 4:30 p.m. – 8 p.m.\nLocation: China Camp Ranger Station\nDifficulty: moderately strenuous (3½ -mile round-trip hike\, with 500-foot ascent)\nCost: free to FOCC members\, $5 donation appreciated for non-members\nAges: 10 and up; under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult \nREGISTER HERE \nPhoto: Michael L. SUMMARY:NATURALIST'S BOOK CLUB: The Network of Life
DESCRIPTION:For October’s selection\, we’ll take a deep dive into David Mendell’s fascinating book\, The Network of Life. Mindell\, a senior researcher at U.C. Berkeley’s Museum of Vertebrate Zoology\, presents a new perspective on evolution and its implications for life on Earth. \nWhile evolution has traditionally been viewed as a branching family tree\, our growing understanding of horizontal evolution—the sharing of genetic material across species—reveals that life is better understood as an interconnected network. As we increasingly reshape life and coevolve with technology\, The Network of Life explores how understanding these connections can offer critical lessons for navigating the challenges ahead. \nLearn more on the publisher’s website. \nSpace is limited; registration is required. Cancellation notified via email.  \nDate: Sunday\, October 25\nTime: 7 p.m. – 8 p.m.\nLocation: virtual; login details sent with confirmed registration\nCost: free to FOCC members\, $5 donation appreciated for non-members\nAges: 12 and up; under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult \nREGISTER HERE
