SUMMARY:Give-Back Morning at China Camp
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a morning making a difference in the park. Our weekly maintenance days tackle a host of jobs large and small\, so there’s something for everyone. But there are things that our volunteers have in common: a willingness to pitch in and work together\, a healthy sense of humor\, and desire to help the park. \nWhether you’re a newbie or experienced\, pitch in to keep the park safe and beautiful. There’s no long-term commitment required—but we hope you come again. \nMeet promptly at 9 a.m. in the maintenance area next to China Camp Ranger Station (101 Peacock Gap Trail\, San Rafael). Bring work gloves and filled water bottles. Long pants and long-sleeve shirt with sturdy hiking shoes or boots recommended. SUMMARY:Full Moon Hike
DESCRIPTION:Spring has brought an abundance of grandeur to the park. The hills are covered in a lush carpet of flowers and greenery\, colorful migratory birds perform acrobatic feats in the air\, and (we hope!) rainclouds part long enough to display luminous lunar spectacles in clear skies. Enjoy these wonders and more during this month’s full moon hike. We will ascend to a vantage point to view May’s “Flower Moon” as it crests over the East Bay hills near the Richmond – San Rafael Bridge. The “Flower Moon” is named for—you guessed it—the season’s plentiful wildflowers. \nThis hike follows a winding trail to a breathtaking 500-foot overlook. Wear sturdy hiking shoes and layer up for a late-spring evening. Remember your essentials: a flashlight or headlamp\, a filled water bottle\, and a camera or smartphone to capture this enchanting lunar display. \nNOTE: Arrive by 9 p.m. to check in; hike starts promptly at 9:10 p.m. for a 10:10 p.m. moonrise.  \n  \nSpace is limited; registration is required. Cancellations notified via email.  \n  \nDate: Friday\, May 24 \nTime:  9:10 p.m. – 11:30 p.m. \nLocation: China Camp Ranger Station \nDifficulty: moderate to challenging; 4 miles round trip with 500-ft. elevation gain \nCost: free to FOCC members; $5 donation appreciated for non-members \nAges: 12 and up; under age 18 must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult \n  \nRESERVE NOW \n  \nPhoto: Steve Ziman

SUMMARY:Naturalist Book Club
DESCRIPTION:This month we will discuss California Against the Sea – Visions for our Vanishing Coastline by Rosanna Xia. In this compelling book\, Xia outlines how The Golden State’s complex economic\, political\, and social dynamics pose challenges—and potential solutions—to an ongoing struggle to confront an impending future haunted by rising seas. \nExcerpt from Heyday publisher website:  \nAlong California’s 1\,200-mile coastline\, the overheated Pacific Ocean is rising and pressing in\, imperiling both wildlife and the maritime towns and cities that 27 million people call home. In California Against the Sea\, Los Angeles Times coastal reporter Rosanna Xia asks: As climate chaos threatens the places we love so fiercely\, will we finally grasp our collective capacity for change? Xia\, a Pulitzer Prize finalist\, investigates the impacts of engineered landscapes\, the market pressures of development\, and the ecological activism and political scrimmages that have carved our contemporary coastline—and foretell even greater changes to our shores… Through graceful reportage\, she charts how the decisions we make today will determine where we go tomorrow: headlong into natural disaster\, or toward an equitable refashioning of coastal stewardship.  \n  \nDate: Sunday\, May 26 \nTime: 7 p.m. – 8 p.m.   \nLocation: online meeting; details emailed with registration confirmation \nCost: free to FOCC members; $5 donation appreciated for non-members \nAges: 12 and up \nMaximum attendees: 25 \n  \nRESERVE NOW

SUMMARY:Summer shorebirds walk
DESCRIPTION:During this month’s birding walk\, we will scan the bay and marshland in search of shorebirds\, including sandpipers\, ducks\, gulls\, egrets\, and majestic great blue herons. Among the most challenging species to identify are newly-fledged gulls. These newbies are undergoing a remarkable four-year transformation\, with the color of their plumage shifting from mottled browns and grays to black-gray-white adult plumage. After our shoreline observations\, we’ll search for songbirds and other species in neighboring habitats. \nHike leader Jerry Coe will discuss how to distinguish bird calls and songs. Jerry will share the four keys to identifying birds in the field: color\, size and shape\, behavior\, and habitat. Bring binoculars\, a filled water bottle\, and snacks. SUMMARY:Book Club: The Backyard Bird Chronicles
DESCRIPTION:During June’s Naturalist Book Club\, we will discuss The Backyard Bird Chronicles by critically acclaimed local author\, Amy Tan\, who also shows off her impressive illustration skills in this memorable book. \nExcerpt from the publisher’s website: \n“Tracking the natural beauty that surrounds us\, The Backyard Bird Chronicles maps the passage of time through daily entries\, thoughtful questions\, and beautiful original sketches. With boundless charm and wit\, author Amy Tan charts her foray into birding and the natural wonders of the world. In 2016\, Amy Tan grew overwhelmed by the state of the world: Hatred and misinformation became a daily presence on social media\, and the country felt more divisive than ever. In search of peace\, Tan turned toward the natural world just beyond her window and\, specifically\, the birds visiting her yard. But what began as an attempt to find solace turned into something far greater—an opportunity to savor quiet moments during a volatile time\, connect to nature in a meaningful way\, and imagine the intricate lives of the birds she admired.” \nDate:  Sunday\, June 30 \nTime: 7 p.m. – 8 p.m.   \nLocation: online meeting; details emailed with registration confirmation \nCost: free to FOCC members \nAge: 12 and up \nMaximum attendees: 25 \n  \nRESERVE NOW

SUMMARY:Give-back morning at China Camp
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a morning making a difference in the park. Our weekly maintenance days tackle a host of jobs large and small\, so there’s something for everyone. You don’t need to be a weightlifter or a construction worker to help out\, in fact we’ve got men and women of all shapes\, sizes\, ages\, and abilities volunteering at the park. Bring work gloves and a filled water bottle. Wear long pants\, long-sleeve shirt\, and sturdy hiking shoes or boots. Sunglasses or other eye protection are recommended. Please leave your four-legged friends at home\, as no pets are allowed on our trails. \nIf you are volunteering as a group of 5 or more\, please contact our team coordinator at kjsmead@comcast.net. This helps us plan for tools and supplies. \nAges: 14 and up (ages under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian). \nNO REGISTRATION NEEDED… JUST SHOW UP! \nCancellations will be posted on our events calendar.
