SUMMARY:Sudden Oak Death Bioblitz
DESCRIPTION:Join the Sudden Oak Death Bioblitz at China Camp. This annual community-science event\, organized by researchers from U.C. Berkeley\, invites volunteers to help monitor the spread of the pathogen Phytophthora ramorum\, the cause of Sudden Oak Death (SOD). The disease has devastated oak-and-bay forests throughout the West\, including at China Camp. \nAt our online training session\, you’ll learn how to recognize disease symptoms and enter data. You’ll then have a five-day window to collect leaf samples in China Camp\, enter location data\, and return your specimen packet to our Ranger Station. Your findings will be submitted to the research team and will contribute valuable data to map infection hot spots and guide local forest management. No experience is required\, just curiosity and a desire to join an impactful project. \nDate: Friday\, April 3 for online training (field collection done on your own time April 3 to 7)\nTime: 3 p.m. – 4 p.m. \nLocation: online (details provided upon registration)\nAges: 10 and older; under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult \nRegister for online training for program

SUMMARY:Pitch in for Earth Day
DESCRIPTION:As a nature lover\, you probably know about Earth Day\, the springtime celebration focusing on environmental protection and how you can help. At state parks in California\, Earth Day is celebrated throughout April\, with volunteer events taking place at many of the state’s 280 parks\, including China Camp. \nOn Saturday\, April 11\, China Camp will host two volunteer projects to enhance and improve the park. The event is cosponsored by the California Sate Parks Foundation (CSPF). Volunteers will head out in the field\, removing invasive Scotch and French broom\, which crowd out native plants\, harm wildlife habitat\, alter soil chemistry\, and increase the risk of destructive wildfire. Skilled volunteers will also be able to help in our major effort to repair historic structures at China Camp Village. \nThis is a great event for all\, including families with teens age 14 and older. Lunch will be provided to all registrants. Free camping at our Back Ranch Meadows Campground will be available (registered participants only). To register (required)\, visit the CSPF website. \nSpace is limited; registration is required. Cancellations notified via email. No Neon link for Earth Day. \nDate: Saturday\, April 11\nTime: 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.\nLocation: China Camp Village upper parking lot\nDifficulty: moderately strenuous\nAges: 14 and older; under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult \nRESERVE NOW

SUMMARY:Speaker Series: oyster research at China Camp
DESCRIPTION:The Olympia oyster (Ostrea lurida) is the only native oyster found on the West Coast. Scientists from NOAA’s National Estuarine Research Reserve (NERR) and their collaborators have been monitoring oyster populations at China Camp State Park and areas around San Francisco Bay for many years. \nNERR senior research technician Anna Deck will share what scientists have learned about patterns in oyster populations from this long-term monitoring effort. Anna will also discuss how her team uses water-quality monitoring to understand these patterns. Come learn about this important research\, and why these little bivalves are so critical to the health of the bay. \nSpace is limited; registration is required. SUMMARY:Birding walk: swallows show up in force
DESCRIPTION:They swoop. They zoom. They flitter\, squeak\, and chur. They are the lively and chatty swallows of spring\, which arrive this month. We’ll be on the lookout—with eyes and ears—for our three most common species. Tree swallows\, which tend to nest in tree cavities\, cruise above the meadows and marshes in search of flying insects. Violet-green swallows\, which nest in tree hollows as well as cliff areas\, might also be on the wing\, along with barn swallows\, easily identified by their deeply forked tails.\n \nIn addition to these seasonal visitors\, we’ll have time to talk about habitats\, and why they are a critical factor in bird identification. Join naturalist Jerry Coe as he shares tips on spotting species\, and how they contribute to China Camp’s ecosystem. \nBinoculars highly recommended. Space is limited; registration is required. Cancellations notified via email. \nDate: Saturday\, April 18\nTime: 8 a.m. – 10 a.m.\nLocation: Turtle Back Nature Trail trailhead\nDifficulty: easy (mostly flat 2-mile walk)\nCost: free to FOCC members; $5 donation appreciated for non-members\nAges: 8 and older; under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult \nRESERVE NOW

SUMMARY:Special event: scan the skies with Marin Stargazers
DESCRIPTION:Look up! When skies are clear and the sun sets\, you can’t miss this month’s dazzling array of natural night lights: a delicate crescent moon\, brilliant Venus shining on the horizon\, and mighty Jupiter glowing overhead. \nCome see these and other evening dazzlers with volunteers from Marin Stargazers. They’ll bring their telescopes so we can all enjoy the beauty\, and learn more about the wonders of the universe. As twilight deepens\, we’ll look for the Beehive Cluster—a family of stars born together. We’ll search for Cor Caroli\, a colorful double star\, and the globular cluster M3\, a dense swarm of ancient stars at the outer edge of our galaxy. From there\, we’ll push our view even farther into space\, searching for faint galaxies millions of light-years away. \nSpace is limited; registration required.
