SUMMARY:Pathogens in our Park: Sudden Oak Death
DESCRIPTION:Have you observed an abnormal amount of dead or dying oaks with yellowed or browning leaves within your local woodland? If so\, you are probably observing trees that have been infected with Sudden Oak Death (SOD). Plant pathogens are a natural part of terrestrial ecosystems\, they play a vital role in shaping populations and are a major force of evolutionary change. Yet over the last two decades\, SOD has imparted devastating consequences for oak\, tanoak and other tree populations. Since the mid-1990’s\, what is now known to be Phytophthora ramorum has killed millions of trees across California and Oregon and it continues to spread faster than researchers can individually document. However\, there is an organized movement to use the power of local citizen volunteers to collect essential field data on an accessible online platform. \nProfessor Wolfgang Schweigkofler\, Ph.D joins us to shine a light on this mysterious disease and\, most importantly\, what you can do to help stop it! \nWolfgang Schweigkofler\, Ph.D. is an assistant Research Professor at Dominican University in San Rafael. He holds a Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences\, Vienna\, Austria. \n  \nDate: Saturday Nov 18th\, 2017        \nLocation: Lower Village Museum \nTime:  5pm -6pm \nAdmission: Members- Free \n                     Non-members-$5 \nPlease RSVP to reserve your space at chinacamp.programs@gmail.com or (415)488-5161

SUMMARY:Monthly Village Talk: King Tides with NERR
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, December 16th\, 2017 \nLocation: China Camp Village Museum \nTime: 4pm -5pm \nCome to China Camp State Park to learn what extreme high tides\, commonly called King Tides\, can tell us about sea level rise. As part of NOAA’s National Estuarine Research Reserve System\, China Camp’s tidal marshes play a key role in helping scientists understand how marshes respond to sea level rise and how we can protect them. In this evening talk\, we will hear about what scientists have learned so far and how they are learning more through research right here at China Camp. \nThis talk is presented by Sarah Ferner\, Education Coordinator for the San Francisco Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve. Sarah loves to learn and teach about marshes and estuaries\, and has a knack for translating complex science into everyday fun. This talk is an expansion of the popular King Tide Walks Sarah leads each year at China Camp and Rush Ranch (in Solano County). If you’ve left a walk wanting more\, this is your chance to go deeper into the science! \nFOCC Members — Free Admission\nGeneral Public — $5 Admission \nHot beverages and snacks will be provided. Please dress warmly! \nSpace is limited and reservations are required.\nTo reserve\, send email to:\nchinacamp.programs@gmail.com or call (415) 488-5161\nInclude your name and the number of seats you need.\nWe will reply to confirm your reservation.\nCancellation announcements will be posted on the FOCC website homepage.
