SUMMARY:SPEAKER SERIES\, Bay shrimp: an important member of our bay’s food web
DESCRIPTION:  \nBay shrimp are a vital part of the San Francisco Estuary\, linking the food web by feeding on small invertebrates and serving as prey for fishes\, crabs\, birds\, and marine mammals. The estuary is home to several native bay shrimp species\, the most prominent being the California bay shrimp (Crangon franciscorum)\, and including three introduced grass shrimp species from Asia that now inhabit our brackish habitats. Over time\, changes in habitat\, freshwater flows\, ocean conditions\, regulations\, and the introduction of non-native shrimp have reshaped both the fishery and the shrimp community. \nJoin Senior Environmental Scientist Kathryn Hieb from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife as she shares insights from decades of research on the ecology\, history\, and changing future of shrimp in the San Francisco Estuary. \nSpace is limited; registration is required. SUMMARY:FULL MOON HIKE: The Harvest Moon
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n  \nJoin us for an invigorating dusk hike to watch September’s full moonrise! Known in the U.S. as the “Harvest Moon\,” this full moon falls closest to the fall equinox. Its extended moonlight once helped farmers bring in the autumn harvest. \nWe’ll also celebrate the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival\, or Moon Festival\, as earlier residents of China Camp village likely did. While we wait for the moon\, we’ll share colorful festival legends and sample traditional moon cakes. \nAs dusk falls\, we’ll climb through oak and bay laurel woodlands\, pausing for sweeping views of San Pablo Bay and keeping watch for swifts\, owls\, and other evening wildlife. Then\, at 6:53 p.m.\, we’ll watch the Harvest Moon rise over the bay\, bathing the landscape in its golden glow. \nSpace is limited; registration is required. DESCRIPTION:Friends of China Camp\, a non-profit organization\, works hard to keep our park safe and beautiful—but we can’t do it without our dedicated team of volunteers! Join us for a fun and rewarding morning of giving back. This is a great time to meet fellow nature enthusiasts\, get some fresh air and exercise\, and maybe even pick up a new skill along the way. \nNo previous experience or long-term commitment required. Wear long pants\, a long-sleeve shirt\, and sturdy shoes (no sandals!). Bring a filled water bottle\, work gloves\, and wear sunscreen (bug spray optional).
