SUMMARY:Books under the Bower: Monthly Book Club
DESCRIPTION:February’s book: \n The Triumph of Seeds by Thor Hanson\, 2015 \n\n“We live in a world of seeds. From our morning toast to the cotton in our clothes\, they are quite literally the stuff and staff of life: supporting diets\, economies\, and civilizations around the globe. Just as the search for nutmeg and pepper drove the Age of Discovery\, coffee beans fueled the Enlightenment and cottonseed sparked the Industrial Revolution. Seeds are fundamental objects of beauty\, evolutionary wonders\, and simple fascinations. Yet\, despite their importance\, seeds are often seen as commonplace\, their extraordinary natural and human histories overlooked…This is a book of knowledge\, adventure\, and wonder\, spun by an award-winning writer with both the charm of a fireside storyteller and the hard-won expertise of a field biologist…” \n Summary from Amazon.com \nWhen: Saturday\, Feburary 24th 2018\nTime: 9:30am\n Meeting Place: Back Ranch Meadows Kiosk entrance\, China Camp State Park \nWant to discuss a good book in the beauty of the outdoors? Join seasoned Naturalist Harold Hirsch as he leads a stimulating book discussion at the China Camp campground amphitheater. We will meet at the campground kiosk entrance off of San Pedro Rd. and walk over to the campground amphitheater. SUMMARY:CANCELLED -Village Talk: Beauty and Mystique of Butterflies
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED DUE TO RAIN\nCHECK UPDATES FOR RESCHEDULED DATE\n\nJoin Dr. Peter Oboyski\, curator and manager of the Essig Museum of Entomology at UC Berkeley as he discusses the biology and diversity of butterflies. There will be specimens of local butterflies to view and information about how to attract butterflies to your yard. \nButterflies are some of the most conspicuous insects we see when hiking and gardening\, yet they still hold many mysteries. Some are territorial over a few square meters of habitat\, while others migrate great distances. Some are common pests\, while others are endangered\, and one local butterfly has gone extinct. And they have complex relationships with the plants they feed on and the predators that attack them\, both as larvae and adults. \n  \nPeter Oboyski is an entomologist who has been studying Lepidoptera (moths and butterflies) in the western US\, Hawaii\, Tahiti\, and Indonesia for over 20 years.    \n___________________________________________________________________________________ \nDate:  Saturday March 17th\, 2018     \nLocation: Lower Village Museum\,  China Camp State Park \nTime:  5:30pm -6:30pm \nAdmission: Members- Free \n                     Non-members-$5 \nSpace is limited and reservations are required.  To reserve\, send email to: chinacamp.programs@gmail.com\, or call (415) 456-0766. SUMMARY:CANCELLED-Kate Marianchild-Special Guest Speaker
DESCRIPTION:THis EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED\nTHE SPEAKER CANNOT MAKE IT DUE TO AN UNEXPECTED ILLNESS. APOLOGIES FOR THE INCONVENIENCE.\n\n\n  \nCalifornia’s oak woodlands host at least 147 bird species\, many of which are so common they are often \ndismissed as ordinary. But can we use the word “ordinary” for the birds who build one of the most intricate nests in the world? What about the avian clans whose members engage in simulated sex rituals every evening before bedtime? Or the jays who have planted almost all of California’s oaks and whose intelligence may surpass that of the great apes? And let’s not forget the ducks who eat acorns and the “little brown jobs” who never move more than 1300 feet from the nests where they were born. This talk will open your eyes to the marvelous survival strategies\, behaviors\, and social structures of birds we see everyday in California’s oak woodlands\, and these common birds will never again seem ordinary. \n  \n  \n\nKate Marianchild is a naturalist and author of  the renown book Secrets of the Oak Woodlands: Plants and Animals among California’s Oaks (Heyday\, 2014). Currently in its fifth printing\, this \naward-winning bestseller is a delightfully narrated and beautifully illustrated romp through California’s most diverse and widespread ecosystem. \nDate:  Sunday April 15th\, 2018     \nLocation: \nLower Village Museum\, China Camp State Park \n        Time: 5:30pm -6:30pm \n       Admission: $10 \nSpace is limited and reservations are required.  To reserve\, send email to: chinacamp.programs@gmail.com\, or call (415) 456-0766.
