SUMMARY:Speaker Series: Wildlife Camera Project
DESCRIPTION:July’s Speaker Series: \n Marin Wildlife Camera Project \n\nMarin’s public parklands are some of the most ecologically diverse and unique landscapes in the world. They sit at the heart of an internationally recognized biodiversity hotspot\, one of 35 areas globally that are the last refuges and essential habitat for populations of native species. Marin County’s land managers needed more data about trends in biodiversity and wildlife occupancy to better understand the status of wildlife populations. So they developed a creative solution: a grid of hidden cameras in the wildlands. Join Lisette Arellano PhD\, the Community Science Program Manager for the One Tam Collaborative\, as she guides us through the findings of the Marin Wildlife Picture Index Project\, a community research project which uses motion-activated wildlife cameras to gather critical data about the wildlife in marin. \n  \nDate:  Saturday July 21st\, 2018     \nLocation: Lower Village Museum\,  China Camp State Park \nTime:  6pm -7pm \nAdmission: Members- Free \n                     Non-members-$5 \nSpace is limited and reservations are required.  To reserve\, send email to: chinacamp.programs@gmail.com\, or call (415) 456-0766. Please indicate a) the date of the program you would like to reserve b) your name\, c) your phone number\, d) the total number of places you are reserving. We will reply to confirm your reservation.

SUMMARY:Wild Geese Sorrow: Book Event & Author Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Wild Geese Sorrow \nA Discussion with Author and Poet \nJeffrey Leong \n\nJoin us for an evening talk with Jeffrey Leong\, author of the new book “Wild Geese Sorrow”: \n  \nThe deep anger\, sorrow\, and loneliness of Chinese immigrant detainees held at the Angel Island Immigration Station between 1910-1940 are revealed in a new book of translations by East Bay poet and writer Jeffrey Thomas Leong. The first new translations in almost 40 years\, the poems of Wild Geese Sorrow: The Chinese Wall Inscriptions at Angel Island are sequenced to narrate the incarceration experience: the shock of arrival\, lengthy stays from a week up to two years\, humiliating medical exams\, political outrage\, and for some\, deportation. Readers will learn of this critical period of anti-Chinese discrimination in American history\, so relevant in the current political climate for our immigration policy debates. \n\nLeong is a MFA graduate of the Vermont College of Fine Arts and has published widely in journals such as Bamboo Ridge\, Crab Orchard\, Hyphen and Spillway.                \nWhen : July 14th\, 2018     \nTime: 6pm-7pm \nWhere: China Camp Village \nLocation: Lower Village Museum\,  China Camp State Park \nSpace is limited and reservations are required.  To reserve\, send email to: chinacamp.programs@gmail.com\, or call (415) 456-0766. SUMMARY:Monthly Nature Book Club
DESCRIPTION:BOOKS UNDER THE BOWER\nMonthly Book Club at China Camp State Park\n  July’s selection:\n“The Song of the Dodo: Island Biogeography in an Age of Extinctions”\n   by David Quammen\n\n“The Song of the Dodo\, is a brilliant\, stirring work\, breathtaking in its scope\, far-reaching in its message… In The Song of the Dodo\, we follow Quammen’s keen intellect through the ideas\, theories\, and experiments of prominent naturalists of the last two centuries. We trail after him as he travels the world\, tracking the subject of island biogeography\, which encompasses nothing less than the study of the origin and extinction of all species. Islands are where species most commonly go extinct — and because\, as Quammen points out\, we live in an age when all of Earth’s landscapes are being chopped into island-like fragments by human activity. \nThrough his eyes\, we glimpse the nature of evolution and extinction\, and in so doing come to understand the monumental diversity of our planet\, and the importance of preserving its wild landscapes\, animals\, and plants. “ \n-Exerpt from Goodreads.com \nWhen: Sunday\, July 22nd 2018\nTime: 7pm-8pm  \nMeeting Place: China Camp Village Museum\, China Camp State Park\nPlease RSVP to chinacamp.programs@gmail.com or (415)456-0766\nPlease bring warm clothing\, water and snacks.

SUMMARY:Village Talk: Butterflies!
DESCRIPTION:August’s Village Talk: \nThe Beauty and Mystique of Butterflies\nJoin Dr. Peter Oboyski\, curator and manager of the Essig Museum of Entomology at UC Berkeley as he discusses the biology and diversity of butterflies. There will be specimens of local butterflies to view and information about how to attract butterflies to your yard. \nButterflies are some of the most conspicuous insects we see when hiking and gardening\, yet they still hold many mysteries. Some are territorial over a few square meters of habitat\, while others migrate great distances. Some are common pests\, while others are endangered\, and one local butterfly has gone extinct. And they have complex relationships with the plants they feed on and the predators that attack them\, both as larvae and adults. \n  \nPeter Oboyski is an entomologist who has been studying Lepidoptera (moths and butterflies) in the western US\, Hawaii\, Tahiti\, and Indonesia for over 20 years.    \n_________________________________________________________________________________ \nDate:  Saturday August 18th\, 2018     \nLocation: Lower Village Museum\,  China Camp State Park \nTime:  6pm-7pm \nAdmission: Members- Free \n                     Non-members-$5 \nSpace is limited and reservations are required.  To reserve\, send email to: chinacamp.programs@gmail.com\, or call (415) 456-0766. SUMMARY:Nature Book Club
DESCRIPTION:BOOKS UNDER THE BOWER \nMonthly Book Club at China Camp State Park \n              August’s selection: \n“The Song of the Dodo: Island Biogeography in an Age of Extinctions”PART 2 \n\nby David Quammen \nJuly’s event covered the first half of this stimulating book- August’s discussion will cover the second half: \n“The Song of the Dodo\, is a brilliant\, stirring work\, breathtaking in its scope\, far-reaching in its message… In The Song of the Dodo\, we follow Quammen’s keen intellect through the ideas\, theories\, and experiments of prominent naturalists of the last two centuries. “ \n-Exerpt from Goodreads.com \nWhen: Sunday\, August 19th\, 2018 \nTime: 7pm-8pm   \nMeeting Place: China Camp Village Museum\, China Camp State Park \nPlease RSVP to chinacamp.programs@gmail.com or (415)456-0766 \nPlease bring warm clothing\, water and snacks.

SUMMARY:Naturalist Book Club
DESCRIPTION:BOOKS UNDER THE BOWER\nMonthly Book Club at China Camp State Park\nSeptember’s selection: \nBy Elizabeth Kolbert \n\nOver the last half-billion years\, there have been five mass extinctions\, when the diversity of life on earth suddenly and dramatically contracted. Scientists around the world are currently monitoring the sixth extinction\, predicted to be the most devastating extinction event since the asteroid impact that wiped out the dinosaurs. This time around\, the cataclysm is us. \n  \nIn prose that is at once frank\, entertaining\, and deeply informed\, The New Yorker writer Elizabeth Kolbert tells us why and how human beings have altered life on the planet in a way no species has before. Interweaving research in half a dozen disciplines\, descriptions of the fascinating species that have already been lost\, and the history of extinction as a concept\, Kolbert provides a moving and comprehensive account of the disappearances occurring before our very eyes. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nWhen: Sunday\, September 30th\, 2018 \nTime: 7pm-8pm   \nMeeting Place: China Camp Village Museum\, China Camp State Park \nPlease RSVP to chinacamp.programs@gmail.com or (415)456-0766 \nPlease bring warm clothing\, water and snacks.
