SUMMARY:A walk through time at China Camp
DESCRIPTION:While our park’s name reflects the Chinese shrimping village that once boomed here over a century ago\, this land has been home to a wide range of human inhabitants\, including indigenous Coast Miwok\, Spanish colonizers\, Mexican land grantees\, and cattle ranchers. For this special Heritage Month event\, join Marcie Miller of the Marin History Museum and Friends of China Camp naturalist Harold Hirsch for a 1.5-mile “walk through time.” We’ll unravel the history of the region’s human inhabitants and their impacts on the land\, such as Native American middens\, once-proposed development\, and nearby rock quarries. Come enjoy the beauty of China Camp and learn local history on this easy walk. \nREGISTER HERE \nSpace is limited. \nCancellations notified via email. \nQuestions? Email info@friendsofchinacamp.org or call (415) 456-0766.

SUMMARY:September Naturalist Book Club: Ways of Being
DESCRIPTION:With AI (artificial intelligence) popping up all over the news\, it’s a great time to dive into a book that’s all about different types of intelligence\, and the ways we can better understand them and how they impact us. Join us as we discuss author James Bridle’s intriguing read\, Ways of Being. \nSummary from James Bridle’s website: \n“In Ways of Being\, writer and artist James Bridle considers the fascinating\, uncanny and multiple ways of existing on [E]arth. What can we learn from these other forms of intelligence and personhood\, and how can we change our societies to live more equitably with one another and the non-human world? From Greek oracles to octopuses\, forests to satellites\, Bridle tells a radical new story about ecology\, technology\, and intelligence. We must . . . expand our definition of these terms to build a meaningful and free relationship with the non-human\, one based on solidarity and cognitive diversity. We have so much to learn\, and many worlds to gain.”  \nOnline meeting; details on how to join will be emailed to you with your registration confirmation. \nCost: Free (donations appreciated) \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:October Birding Hike
DESCRIPTION:October is the height of fall migration\, with a staggering 70 percent of all bird species joining in a mass migration to wintering grounds around the globe. Moving southward\, often to warmer climes in Central and South America\, birds tend to follow known water sources\, like ours at China Camp. In the cover of darkness\, birds take to the skies\, with most species flying a staggering 250 to 450 miles between twilight and 4 a.m. every night. \nOn this month’s walk\, we’ll look for flocks of brown pelicans and white pelicans rising in spirals as they begin their migration. We hope to spy our family of juvenile white-tailed kites\, as well as young osprey born this spring. Bird expert Jerry Coe will share tips on using binoculars and bird guides\, and how to identify birds using habitat and other clues. Bring binoculars\, water\, wear comfortable walking shoes\, and bring layers for changeable weather. \n  \nDate: Saturday October 14\nTime: 8 a.m. – 10 a.m.\nLocation: Turtle Back Trailhead\nDifficulty: Easy\, 1.5-mile walk\nAge: 12 and up with parent or responsible adult\nCost: Free (donations appreciated) \nREGISTER NOW

SUMMARY:Autumn Seed-Seeker Hike
DESCRIPTION:With fall’s return\, we will seek (but not collect) seeds as plants prepare for winter. Join this naturalist-led hike and talk about the different strategies that plants use in producing seeds—from prickly pods to edible nuts—all geared towards increasing the odds of perpetuating the species’ success. Learn about the natural history of seeds\, and how they adapt to local conditions\, such as wildfires and drought. Dress in layers for the crisp\, cool fall weather. \n  \nSPECIAL BONUS: Come an hour early (9 a.m.) to enjoy a chance to catch this weekend’s annular eclipse. Special viewing boxes and safety glasses will be available to watch this rare “ring of fire” event—only partial in our area but still quite a spectacle\, as long as the clouds stay away. \nSpace for events is limited so sign up now. Cancellations will be notified via email. Questions? Email programs@friendsofchinacamp.org or call (415) 456-0766. \nDate: Saturday\, October 14\nTime: 10 a.m. – noon\nLocation: North end of Knight Dr. (San Rafael)\nDifficulty: Easy (2-mile loop; mostly flat)\nAge: 8 and up with parent or responsible adult\nCost: Free (donations appreciated) \nREGISTER NOW

SUMMARY:CANCELED: Hunter Moon Hike
DESCRIPTION:We are sorry to inform you that due to the emphasized high wind warnings from Marin County\, and the Red Flag Warning issued today\, our hike lead has decided the safest option is to cancel tonight’s Program. \n\n\nIf you would like more information\, please visit the following link: https://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=37.9931&lon=-122.5013\n\n\nThank you for your engagement with China Camp\, and we look forward to many more adventures in the future.\n  \nWith fall’s return\, the longer nights conjure up spirits. From old European traditions\, Halloween’s rites fill the night. For traditional Native Californians\, the full moon’s movement and its cyclical changes marked the seasons\, the passage of time\, and cycles of renewal. Join us to rekindle our connections with the night sky through the rise of the ghostly “Hunter Moon” as it rises over the Berkley Hills. \nDress for a crisp\, cool night. Bring water and your camera. Wear sturdy hiking shoes\, and pack a flashlight or headlamp\, either fully charged or with fresh batteries. \nNOTE: This hike begins sharply at 5:15 p.m. Please arrive early to check in\, and don’t be late or you’ll miss the fun. \nSpace for events is limited so sign up now. Cancellations will be notified via email. Questions? Email programs@friendsofchinacamp.org or call (415) 456-0766. \nDate: Saturday October 28\nTime: 5:15 p.m. – 7:45 p.m.

SUMMARY:October Naturalist’s Book Club
DESCRIPTION:How are scientists\, farmers\, and foodies helping heal our planet’s soil? Join us as we dig our hands into author Kristin Ohlson’s fascinating book\, The Soil Will Save Us. \nSummary from author Kristin Ohlson’s website: \n“The granddaughter of farmers and the daughter of avid gardeners\, Ohlson has long had an appreciation for the soil. A chance conversation with a chef led her to the crossroads of science\, farming\, food\, and environmentalism. She discovered that there is a vast kingdom of creatures under our feet—billions of microorganisms in a tablespoon of soil—that take the carbon dioxide that plants pull from the atmosphere and turn it into life-giving soil carbon. Ohlson introduces visionary scientists\, farmers\, foodies\, ranchers\, and landscapers\, whose work shows that earth can be healed and offers the hope that seemingly intractable problems like climate change\, air and water pollution\, food quality\, and even obesity have the same low-tech solution.” \nDate: Sunday\, October 29 \nTime: 7 p.m. – 8 p.m. \nVenue: Online meeting; details emailed with your registration confirmation. \nCost: Free (donations appreciated) \nSpace for events is limited so sign up now. Cancellations will be notified via email. Questions? Email programs@friendsofchinacamp.org or call (415) 456-0766. \nREGISTER NOW
