SUMMARY:September Naturalist Book Club: Ways of Being
DESCRIPTION:With AI (artificial intelligence) popping up all over the news\, it’s a great time to dive into a book that’s all about different types of intelligence\, and the ways we can better understand them and how they impact us. Join us as we discuss author James Bridle’s intriguing read\, Ways of Being. \nSummary from James Bridle’s website: \n“In Ways of Being\, writer and artist James Bridle considers the fascinating\, uncanny and multiple ways of existing on [E]arth. What can we learn from these other forms of intelligence and personhood\, and how can we change our societies to live more equitably with one another and the non-human world? From Greek oracles to octopuses\, forests to satellites\, Bridle tells a radical new story about ecology\, technology\, and intelligence. We must . . . expand our definition of these terms to build a meaningful and free relationship with the non-human\, one based on solidarity and cognitive diversity. We have so much to learn\, and many worlds to gain.”  \nOnline meeting; details on how to join will be emailed to you with your registration confirmation. \nCost: Free (donations appreciated) \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:October Birding Hike
DESCRIPTION:October is the height of fall migration\, with a staggering 70 percent of all bird species joining in a mass migration to wintering grounds around the globe. Moving southward\, often to warmer climes in Central and South America\, birds tend to follow known water sources\, like ours at China Camp. In the cover of darkness\, birds take to the skies\, with most species flying a staggering 250 to 450 miles between twilight and 4 a.m. every night. \nOn this month’s walk\, we’ll look for flocks of brown pelicans and white pelicans rising in spirals as they begin their migration. We hope to spy our family of juvenile white-tailed kites\, as well as young osprey born this spring. Bird expert Jerry Coe will share tips on using binoculars and bird guides\, and how to identify birds using habitat and other clues. Bring binoculars\, water\, wear comfortable walking shoes\, and bring layers for changeable weather. \n  \nDate: Saturday October 14\nTime: 8 a.m. – 10 a.m.\nLocation: Turtle Back Trailhead\nDifficulty: Easy\, 1.5-mile walk\nAge: 12 and up with parent or responsible adult\nCost: Free (donations appreciated) \nREGISTER NOW

Learn about the natural history of seeds\, and how they adapt to local conditions\, such as wildfires and drought. Dress in layers for the crisp\, cool fall weather. \n  \nSPECIAL BONUS: Come an hour early (9 a.m.) to enjoy a chance to catch this weekend’s annular eclipse. Special viewing boxes and safety glasses will be available to watch this rare “ring of fire” event—only partial in our area but still quite a spectacle\, as long as the clouds stay away. \nSpace for events is limited so sign up now. SUMMARY:CANCELED: Hunter Moon Hike
DESCRIPTION:We are sorry to inform you that due to the emphasized high wind warnings from Marin County\, and the Red Flag Warning issued today\, our hike lead has decided the safest option is to cancel tonight’s Program. \n\n\nIf you would like more information\, please visit the following link: https://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=37.9931&lon=-122.5013\n\n\nThank you for your engagement with China Camp\, and we look forward to many more adventures in the future.\n  \nWith fall’s return\, the longer nights conjure up spirits. From old European traditions\, Halloween’s rites fill the night. For traditional Native Californians\, the full moon’s movement and its cyclical changes marked the seasons\, the passage of time\, and cycles of renewal. SUMMARY:October Naturalist’s Book Club
DESCRIPTION:How are scientists\, farmers\, and foodies helping heal our planet’s soil? Join us as we dig our hands into author Kristin Ohlson’s fascinating book\, The Soil Will Save Us. \nSummary from author Kristin Ohlson’s website: \n“The granddaughter of farmers and the daughter of avid gardeners\, Ohlson has long had an appreciation for the soil. A chance conversation with a chef led her to the crossroads of science\, farming\, food\, and environmentalism. She discovered that there is a vast kingdom of creatures under our feet—billions of microorganisms in a tablespoon of soil—that take the carbon dioxide that plants pull from the atmosphere and turn it into life-giving soil carbon. Ohlson introduces visionary scientists\, farmers\, foodies\, ranchers\, and landscapers\, whose work shows that earth can be healed and offers the hope that seemingly intractable problems like climate change\, air and water pollution\, food quality\, and even obesity have the same low-tech solution.” \nDate: Sunday\, October 29 \nTime: 7 p.m. – 8 p.m. \nVenue: Online meeting; details emailed with your registration confirmation. \nCost: Free (donations appreciated) \nSpace for events is limited so sign up now. SUMMARY:November Birding Hike: end of fall migration
DESCRIPTION:Nearly three out of four species of birds spread their wings and fly away to different climes when autumn arrives and days turn colder. This month marks the end of the great fall migration. Here in Northern California\, the flooded rice fields of the Central Valley and surrounding farm fields fill with ducks\, geese\, and other waterfowl that have left the Arctic or other northern locales to winter in our warmer climate. Many waterfowl stop in the waters around China Camp on their way to wintering grounds. We will look for them and other species on this month’s birding hike. \nAll levels of birding ability are welcome. We’ll review how to use bird guides\, checklists\, and binoculars\, and we’ll go over the keys ways to identify birds in the field. This month\, we’ll pay special attention to China Camp’s six basic habitats. Though more than 850 species of birds live in North America\, only some 15 species live in each specific habitat—a great bit of information when trying to narrow down what species you’re seeing in the field. \nEvent may be canceled due to rain or high winds. Dress in layers for changeable weather. Registration is required. \nDate: Saturday\, November 25\nTime: 8 a.m. – 10 a.m.\nLocation: Turtle Back parking area\nDifficulty: Easy\, 1.5-mile walk\nAges: 12 and up with parent or responsible adult\nCost: Free (donations appreciated) \nREGISTER NOW \nPhoto: Bewick’s wren by Jerry Coe

SUMMARY:November Naturalist’s Book Club
DESCRIPTION:In this month’s reading selection\, esteemed planetary geologist Erik Asphaug explores why the moon’s two sides are markedly different: the far side is mountainous\, the near side has plains created by lava. In this exhilarating read\, Asphaug takes us on a tour through the farthest reaches of our galaxy and of time itself to find out why our celestial satellite has such extraordinary geology. \nSummary from publisher Harper Academic: \n“An astonishing exploration of planet formation and the origins of life by one of the world’s most innovative planetary geologists. \nFourteen billion years ago\, the universe exploded into being\, creating galaxies and stars. Planets formed out of the leftover dust and gas that coalesced into larger and larger bodies orbiting around each star. In a sort of heavenly survival of the fittest\, planetary bodies smashed into each other until solar systems emerged. Curiously\, instead of being relatively similar in terms of composition\, the planets in our solar system\, and the comets\, asteroids\, satellites and rings\, are bewitchingly distinct. So\, too\, the halves of our moon.” \nDate: Sunday\, November 26\nTime: 7 p.m. – 8 p.m.\nVenue: Online meeting; details emailed with your registration confirmation.\nCost: Free (donations appreciated) \nREGISTER NOW
