SUMMARY:FULL MOON HIKE: The Harvest Moon
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n  \nJoin us for an invigorating dusk hike to watch September’s full moonrise! Known in the U.S. as the “Harvest Moon\,” this full moon falls closest to the fall equinox. Its extended moonlight once helped farmers bring in the autumn harvest. \nWe’ll also celebrate the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival\, or Moon Festival\, as earlier residents of China Camp village likely did. While we wait for the moon\, we’ll share colorful festival legends and sample traditional moon cakes. \nAs dusk falls\, we’ll climb through oak and bay laurel woodlands\, pausing for sweeping views of San Pablo Bay and keeping watch for swifts\, owls\, and other evening wildlife. Then\, at 6:53 p.m.\, we’ll watch the Harvest Moon rise over the bay\, bathing the landscape in its golden glow. \nSpace is limited; registration is required. Cancellation notified via email.                                          \nDate: Saturday\, September 26\nTime: 5:30 p.m. – 8 p.m.\nLocation: China Camp Ranger Station\nDifficulty: moderately strenuous (3.5-mile round-trip hike\, with 500-foot ascent)\nCost: free to FOCC members\, $5 donation appreciated for non-members\nAges: 10 and up; under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult \nRESERVE NOW \nPhoto: Harold Hirsch/FOCC volunteer

SUMMARY:NATURALIST’S BOOK CLUB: Every Living Thing
DESCRIPTION:  \n\nWhat if two eighteenth-century men set out to name and describe every living thing on Earth\, and ended up reshaping how we understand life itself? Every Living Thing brings Carl Linnaeus and Georges-Louis de Buffon to vivid life\, tracing their rivalry\, radically different ideas about nature\, and the explorers and scientists who carried their work forward. It’s a sweeping story of curiosity\, ambition\, discovery\, and the origins of modern biology. \nRead more on the publisher’s website. \nSpace is limited; registration is required. Cancellation notified via email.  \nDate: Sunday\, September 27 \nTime: 7 p.m. – 8 p.m. \nLocation: Virtual \nCost: free to FOCC members\, $5 donation appreciated for non-members \nAges: 12 and up; under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult \nRESERVE NOW
