SUMMARY:Park Champions Work Day
DESCRIPTION:FOCC is offering yet another opportunity to flex your muscles and show our rutted trails who’s boss. \nWe will be rebuilding trail tread to make it safer and to comply with the State Park standards. We will also be putting the final touches on the tread work that was done in June. Some tasks will be strenuous and some easier. There’s something for everyone! \nVolunteers 16 and older are welcome to join us. Minors must be accompanied by a legal guardian. \nChampion events are held in partnership with the California State Parks Foundation (CSPF). Please register on their website. Your registration helps us plan for equipment\, supplies and of course\, food. The festivities are from 9AM to 3PM. Lunch is included. CSPF will contact all registrants with information about where to meet\, what to bring (in addition to a smile) and what to wear. \nFree camping is available Friday and Saturday nights. Space is limited to registered volunteers. To reserve your camping spot\, email parkchampions@calparks.org. \n We’re looking forward to having you with us. We promise an amazing transition from “Volunteers are going to fix THAT????” to “Look what we did!” \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Miwok History Walk
DESCRIPTION: August 10th \nA Walk Honoring Native Californians: \nMiwok Life at China Camp\n\nIndigenous coastal Miwok people have lived and thrived in the China Camp area for over 5000 years. Before Spanish settlers forced the native population off their land and into missions\, the Miwok people flourished due to an abundance of food and natural materials from the oak woodland forest and the coastal bay shoreline. It is estimated that there were over several thousand Coastal Miwok in the North Bay at the time of the Spanish arrival in 1769. Most of this population was dispersed within 100 years. Many died of European diseases. Miwok people still live in the Bay Area today\, with the largest group at Graton Rancheria in Sonoma County. Join naturalist Jerry Coe for an educational walk as he discusses the pre-colonial settlements of the coastal Miwok people at China Camp. He will cover how they lived\, what they wore and ate\, what they used for medicine\, and some of their common cultural traditions and folklore.  \n  \n Date: August 10th \nTime: 9am-11am \nLocation:  Turtleback Trailhead \nSpace is limited and reservations are required. \nTo reserve\, send email to: \nchinacamp.programs@gmail.com or call (415) 456-0766. \nInclude your name\, the number of seats you need\, and your phone #. \nWe will reply to confirm your reservation. \nCancellation announcements will be posted on the FOCC website homepage.

SUMMARY:Naturalist Book Club
DESCRIPTION: August 25th \nNaturalist Book Club\nJoin us as we discuss David Rains Wallace’s captivating book- Mountains and Marshes- Exploring the Bay Area’s Natural History. \n\nDescribed by the San Francisco Chronicle as “a writer in the tradition of Henry David Thoreau\, John Muir\, and other self-educated seers”\, David Rains Wallace turns his attention to one of the most distinctive corners of California: the San Francisco Bay Area. Weaving a complex and engaging story of the Bay Area from personal\, historical\, and environmental threads\, Wallace’s exploration of the natural world takes readers on a fascinating tour through the region: from Point Reyes National Park\, where an abandoned campfire and an invasion of Douglas fir trees combusted into a dangerous wildfire\, to Oakland’s Lake Merritt\, a surprising site amid skyscrapers for some of the best local bird-watching… \n  \nWith a naturalist’s eye\, a penchant for local history\, and an obvious passion for the subject\, Wallace’s new collection is among the first nature writing dedicated entirely to the Bay Area. \nExcerpt by Amazon.com \n  \nJoin us for a lively discussion of this fascinating book. \n  \n  \n  \nDate: August 25th  \nTime: 7:00pm – 8:00pm \nLocation: China Camp Village Museum\, China Camp State Park \n  \nSpace is limited and reservations are required.
