DESCRIPTION:Here’s your chance to take part in an unforgettable evening experience: watching the full moon rise above the bay from an exclusive vantage point at China Camp. This month’s celestial showstopper is called the Sturgeon Moon\, a name derived from Algonquin and other tribes in the Northeastern U.S.\, who knew that this month’s full moon marked the best time of year to catch freshwater sturgeon. (In the salty bay waters off China Camp\, we also have sturgeon\, but typically their peak season is later in the fall.) \nStarting our hike at dusk\, we’ll climb through the oak and bay laurel woodlands\, keeping our eyes peeled for bats\, owls\, and other creatures of the night. DESCRIPTION:  \nSeptember marks the beginning of the great southward migration. Birds traveling from as far away as the Arctic will be passing through our area on their journey. Between September and November\, nearly 70 percent of North America’s bird species migrate south. Of the approximately 200 species that can be seen in Northern California\, how many of the migrants can you identify? \nJoin us for a guided walk as we use our eyes and ears to find and identify the birds we encounter. Species we may see include osprey\, white-tailed kites\, five species of swallows\, red-shouldered hawks\, ash-throated flycatchers\, Western bluebirds\, and spotted towhees. DESCRIPTION:  \nBay shrimp are a vital part of the San Francisco Estuary\, linking the food web by feeding on small invertebrates and serving as prey for fishes\, crabs\, birds\, and marine mammals. The estuary is home to several native bay shrimp species\, the most prominent being the California bay shrimp (Crangon franciscorum)\, and including three introduced grass shrimp species from Asia that now inhabit our brackish habitats. This is a great time to meet fellow nature enthusiasts\, get some fresh air and exercise\, and maybe even pick up a new skill along the way. \nNo previous experience or long-term commitment required. Wear long pants\, a long-sleeve shirt\, and sturdy shoes (no sandals!). Bring a filled water bottle\, work gloves\, and wear sunscreen (bug spray optional).
