DESCRIPTION:October is the height of fall migration\, with birds moving south toward Central and South America. We’ll be on the lookout for migratory wetland species\, such as red knots. (In fact\, our new Motus Tower\, affixed to our campground kiosk\, can help you track what’s flying over the park.) In the forests and meadows\, we’ll be on the lookout for warblers and flycatchers before they depart for warmer climes. And we’ll try to spy local birds that overwinter here\, such as white-tailed kites and ospreys. Drawing from ancient European traditions\, the annual rites of Halloween are near. \nHere at China Camp State Park\, Native American communities observed the movements and cycles of the full moon to mark the seasons\, the passage of time\, and cycles of renewal. Join us beneath the night sky as the ghostly “Hunter’s Moon” rises over the hills on the east side of San Francisco Bay\, rekindling our connection to the rhythms of the moon\, the land\, and the changing seasons. \nArrive by 4:30 p.m. Our hike will start promptly at 4:45 p.m. to catch the moonrise.
