SUMMARY:Après Turkey Family Hike
DESCRIPTION:Instead of shopping on the busiest day of the year\, come stretch your legs in the beauty of China Camp. Our day-after-Thanksgiving Day hike will follow the easy Shoreline Trail to the enormous “Mother Oak Tree.” Along the way we will look for the bright red berries of toyon (assuming red-breasted robins haven’t gobbled them up for their own Thanksgiving feast). Dress in layers for changeable weather. Registration is required. Pets are not allowed on our trails\, so please leave your four-legged family members at home. \nDate: Friday\, November 24\nTime: 10 a.m. – noon\nLocation: China Camp Village upper parking area\nDifficulty: Easy to moderate; 2.5-mile mostly flat round trip\nAge: 8 and up (ages 8 to 18 must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult)\nCost: Free (donations appreciated) \nREGISTER NOW

SUMMARY:November Birding Hike: end of fall migration
DESCRIPTION:Nearly three out of four species of birds spread their wings and fly away to different climes when autumn arrives and days turn colder. This month marks the end of the great fall migration. Here in Northern California\, the flooded rice fields of the Central Valley and surrounding farm fields fill with ducks\, geese\, and other waterfowl that have left the Arctic or other northern locales to winter in our warmer climate. Many waterfowl stop in the waters around China Camp on their way to wintering grounds. We will look for them and other species on this month’s birding hike. \nAll levels of birding ability are welcome. We’ll review how to use bird guides\, checklists\, and binoculars\, and we’ll go over the keys ways to identify birds in the field. This month\, we’ll pay special attention to China Camp’s six basic habitats. Though more than 850 species of birds live in North America\, only some 15 species live in each specific habitat—a great bit of information when trying to narrow down what species you’re seeing in the field. \nEvent may be canceled due to rain or high winds. Dress in layers for changeable weather. Registration is required. \nDate: Saturday\, November 25\nTime: 8 a.m. – 10 a.m.\nLocation: Turtle Back parking area\nDifficulty: Easy\, 1.5-mile walk\nAges: 12 and up with parent or responsible adult\nCost: Free (donations appreciated) \nREGISTER NOW \nPhoto: Bewick’s wren by Jerry Coe

SUMMARY:November Naturalist’s Book Club
DESCRIPTION:In this month’s reading selection\, esteemed planetary geologist Erik Asphaug explores why the moon’s two sides are markedly different: the far side is mountainous\, the near side has plains created by lava. In this exhilarating read\, Asphaug takes us on a tour through the farthest reaches of our galaxy and of time itself to find out why our celestial satellite has such extraordinary geology. \nSummary from publisher Harper Academic: \n“An astonishing exploration of planet formation and the origins of life by one of the world’s most innovative planetary geologists. \nFourteen billion years ago\, the universe exploded into being\, creating galaxies and stars. Planets formed out of the leftover dust and gas that coalesced into larger and larger bodies orbiting around each star. In a sort of heavenly survival of the fittest\, planetary bodies smashed into each other until solar systems emerged. Curiously\, instead of being relatively similar in terms of composition\, the planets in our solar system\, and the comets\, asteroids\, satellites and rings\, are bewitchingly distinct. So\, too\, the halves of our moon.” \nDate: Sunday\, November 26\nTime: 7 p.m. – 8 p.m.\nVenue: Online meeting; details emailed with your registration confirmation.\nCost: Free (donations appreciated) \nREGISTER NOW

Bring a fully charged flashlight or headlamp\, water\, and your camera. Pets are not allowed on our trails\, so please leave your critters at home. \nNOTE: The hike begins sharply at 4 p.m. for a 5 p.m. moonrise. Please arrive early to check in\, and don’t be late or you’ll miss the fun. This event may be canceled due to overcast skies\, rain or high winds.
