SUMMARY:Birding Hike
DESCRIPTION:January is a great time to view large migrating birds along the San Pedro shoreline. During this winter birding walk\, birding expert Jerry Coe will guide us as we keep watch for snow geese and Ross’s geese gliding over the bay on their way to over-winter in the flooded rice farms of the Sacramento Valley. American White Pelicans\, one of the largest birds in North America\, may be seen swimming near the shore. These pelicans remain nearby until spring\, when they move to the Great Basin to breed. We will also be on the lookout for resident Anna’s hummingbirds\, spotted towhees\, nuthatches\, and Vaux swifts. Attend this engaging event to learn about birding tools and valuable techniques for identification. Bring binoculars and a full water bottle\, and wear comfortable walking shoes.  \n  \nDate: Saturday\, January 11 \nTime: 8 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.  \nLocation: Turtle Back trailhead \nDifficulty: easy 1.5- to 2-mile walk. This walk meets rain or shine. If raining we will move to the China Camp Village Cafe \nCost: free for FOCC members; $5 donation appreciated for non-members \nAge: 10 and older; under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult \nADA accessible: no \n  \nRESERVE NOW  \n  \nSpace is limited; registration is required. SUMMARY:Junior Ranger King Tide Hike
DESCRIPTION:Make way\, the king is coming to China Camp! Not King Charles\, but a king tide! California’s coastal and bay waters will rise to extraordinary levels this winter\, causing certain low-lying coastal and bay regions to flood. This phenomenon\, deemed a king tide\, temporarily transforms China Camp’s salt marsh into a watery mirror of the sky with the edges buzzing with wildlife. Small marsh residents like lizards\, insects\, and salt marsh harvest mice will seek higher ground to escape the rising tides\, while birds of prey wait along the shoreline to snack on these fleeing creatures.  \nOn this short\, three-fourths mile round-trip excursion\, Junior Rangers will have the opportunity to view the rising tides\, watch the wildlife\, and learn about the special role that the sun and the moon play in these fascinating annual occurrences. \nSpace is limited; registration is required. Cancellations notified via email. \nDate: Saturday\, January 11\nTime: 10 a.m. – noon\nLocation: Turtle Back trailhead\nCost: free to FOCC members; $5 donation appreciated for non-members\nAges: 7 to 9 years old; must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult\nADA accessible \nRESERVE NOW

SUMMARY:Naturalist Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The Earth Transformed by Peter Frankopan \nJoin a lively discussion of The Earth Transformed by Peter Frankopan\, listed as a 2023 best book of the year by The New Yorker. Frankopan is a professor of global history at Oxford University.  \nFrom the publisher’s website:   \n\n“Global warming is one of the greatest dangers mankind faces today. Even as temperatures increase\, sea levels rise\, and natural disasters escalate\, our current environmental crisis feels difficult to predict and understand. But climate change and its effects on us are not new. In a bold narrative that spans centuries and continents\, Peter Frankopan argues that nature has always played a fundamental role in the writing of history… Again and again\, Frankopan shows that when past empires have failed to act sustainably\, they have been met with catastrophe. Blending brilliant historical writing and cutting-edge scientific research\, The Earth Transformed will radically reframe the way we look at the world and our future.” \n  \n  \nDate:  Sunday\, January 26 \nTime: 7 p.m. – 8 p.m.   \nLocation: online meeting; details emailed with registration confirmation \nCost: free for FOCC members; $5 donation appreciated for non-members \nAge: 12 and up \n  \nRESERVE NOW
