SUMMARY:Speaker Series: Latest news on Ridgway’s rails
DESCRIPTION:It’s not often that you get to peek into the lives of a federally endangered species. Here at China Camp\, we’re lucky to have a healthy population of a critically threatened bird\, the Ridgway’s rail. This secretive\, hen-size marsh bird—mottled gray-brown in color with a rusty chest—scurries along the serpentine channels and under the cover of pickleweed in our wetland areas. There’s plenty of those in the marshes at China Camp\, known to have some of the healthiest salt-marsh wetlands in the San Francisco Bay Area. \nSince we can’t guarantee that you’ll spy these elusive rails\, we’re bringing you the next best thing: an expert on the birds and the marshlands the call home. Julian Wood\, the San Francisco Bay Program Leader with Petaluma-based Point Blue Conservation Science\, will share key information on the Ridgway’s rail and its habitat. Julian\, whose work focuses on wetland bird communities around the Bay Area\, will discuss latest findings on Ridgway’s rails\, and why it’s so important to restore and protect the places where they and other wetland species still thrive. \nFor more on China Camp’s rails\, see this article. \nSpace is limited; registration is required. Cancellation notified via email. \nDate: Wednesday\, December 3 \nTime: 6 p.m. – 7 p.m \nLocation: China Camp Village museum \nCost: free to FOCC members; $5 donation appreciated for non-members \nAges: 12 and older; under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult \nADA accessible: yes \nRESERVE NOW \n  \nPhoto of Ridgway’s Rail by Len Blumin/Wkimedia Creative Commons

SUMMARY:Family fun: watch the “Long Night Moon” rise
DESCRIPTION:Bundle up the whole family and head to the picnic area at China Camp Point to watch 2025’s last full moon rise. No need to hike to an overlook this month\, since the easy-to-access point is the perfect place to catch this monthly spectacle. \nMohican tribes called this month’s lunar stunner the “Cold Moon\,” since it rises when temperatures dip in winter. Mohawk people called December’s moon the “Long Night Moon\,” rising as it does in the time of year when days shrink and nights stretch towards the winter solstice. No matter what you call it\, the moon will be particularly eye-popping this month as it slowly rises\, since it’s the time of year when the moon is closest to Earth. Note that sunset will be at 4:50 p.m.\, and moonrise will be a little after 5:30 p.m. Enjoy a cup of hot chocolate when you arrive\, courtesy of Friends of China Camp. \nThis is a family-friendly\, drop-in event; no registration required. Cancellation will be posted on our events calendar. \n  \nDate: Friday\, December 5 \nTime: 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. \nLocation: China Camp Point parking lot \nDifficulty: easy (no hiking) \nCost: free to FOCC members; $5 donation appreciated for non-members \nAges: all ages welcome; under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult \nADA accessible: yes \nPhoto of moon at China Camp Village by Harriot Manley/FOCC volunteer

SUMMARY:Catch the king tide
DESCRIPTION:If you’ve lived through a wet winter in this area\, you know that the highest tides of the year\, called king tides\, create quite a show at China Camp. Combined with runoff from winter storms\, king tides can turn the park’s bayfront wetlands and meadows into shallow lakes of brackish bay water. And N. San Pedro Road? It’s underwater\, too. \nThis month\, we’re offering a very special drop-in event focusing on these annual inundations. First\, you’ll get expert insights about king tides\, and how they serve as a crystal ball for researchers studying the impacts of rising sea levels due to climate change. Then\, you’ll be invited to become part of an important “community science” project led by the California Coastal Commission. It’s your chance to photograph king tide events\, then submit images and notes through a special web portal or mobile app. These images will then help researchers visualize and document the potential impacts of future sea-level rise. \nJoin us and become part of this important community science effort\, or just enjoy the wet and wild show. Come anytime between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. (no need to register). \nNote: Due to potential flooding\, access from the northwest may be blocked. Instead\, head into the park from the southeast entrance\, through San Rafael and past Peacock Gap. Cancellation will be posted on our events calendar (https://friendsofchinacamp.org/events/).  \nDate: Saturday December 6\nTime: 10 – 1 p.m. (drop-in event)\nLocation: Turtle Back Trail trailhead\nDifficulty: easy\nCost: free to FOCC members; $5 donation appreciated for non-members\nAges: 10 and older; under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult\nADA accessible: yes \nPhoto: Harriot Manley/FOCC volunteer

SUMMARY:Birding walk: winter surprises
DESCRIPTION:At the edge of a meadow\, a male Anna’s hummingbird whizzes by\, lands on a twig\, and starts singing his rusty-hinge song. Towhees scuff in the dry leaves. Overhead\, an osprey flaps by\, a fish clutched in its talons. \nEven though our seasonal summertime birds have headed to warmer climes for the winter\, there are still plenty of species in the park to enjoy right now. This walk will take you to various habitats as we look for overwintering species. Come brush up on the keys to field identification\, and get a chance to observe seasonal behaviors\, such as the early courtship and nesting of those feisty little Anna’s. Also learn about the annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count and how you can participate. \nAll levels of birding ability are welcome. Space is limited; registration is required. Cancellation notified via email. \nDate: Saturday\, December 13 \nTime: 8 a.m. – 10 a.m. \nLocation:  Turtle Back Trail trailhead \nDifficulty: easy (about 2 miles on mostly flat trails) \nCost: free to FOCC members; $5 donation appreciated for non-members \nAges: 10 and older; under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult \nRESERVE NOW \nPhoto: male Anna’s hummingbird by Harriot Manley/FOCC \n
