Park Champions Work Day

Join us for a day a trail repairs. We’ll be digging up a section of Shoreline Trail, rebuilding it to state standards, compacting the tread, replacing split rail fencing and wattling the edge.

Lunch is provided. Limited free camping is available to registered volunteers. Ages 16 and up are welcome. Volunteers under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

To register, please go to the California State Parks Foundation website. Once you are registered, they will send additional information about where to meet, what to bring (in addition to your smiles and volunteer spirit) and what to wear. Your registration helps us prepare for equipment, supplies and, of course, food. Be sure to include your email address…just in case rain causes us to cancel and we need to contact you.

June’s Selection:

Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds

Join us for an outdoor showing of Alfred Hitchcock’s classic horror film, The Birds. This 1963 film was shot in Bodega Bay California and was inspired by a short story called The Birds which was written in 1952 by Daphne Du Maurier. The film stars Rod Taylor and Tippi Hedren (in her screen debut), supported by Jessica Tandy, Suzanne Pleshette and Veronica Cartwright.

In 2016, The Birds was deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” by the United States Library of Congress, and selected for preservation in its’ National Film Registry.

Join our naturalist on a guided hike at China Camp. Weekend hikes range from easy to advanced, and from 1.5 to 6 miles. Please wear layers and good hiking shoes. Bring appropriate hiking gear, water, snacks, sunscreen and a hat.

6/2  Back Ranch Meadows12:30pm:  Moderate, 3 miles, 400 ft elevation gain. Lead by naturalist Harold Hirsch.

  • 6/8 Knight Drive Trailhead – 12:30pm:  Intermediate,  2-3 miles, 600 ft elevation gain. Lead by naturalist Harold Hirsch. Begins at the trailhead at the end of Knight Drive.
  • 6/15 Turtleback Walk – 12:30pm: Easy, ¾ mile, 40 ft elevation gain. Lead by naturalist Harold Hirsch.

 

6/30 China Camp Point Parking Lot – 12:30pm Moderate, 3 miles, 200 ft elevation gain. Lead by naturalist Harold Hirsch.

July 7th Junior Ranger Program

China Camp Shoreline Low Tide Exploration.

Earn your Jr. Ranger badge as we discover the crabs, mollusks, and shorebirds that live on our rocky shore. We’ll learn about the cultural and natural history of China Camp’s estuary. Each program encourages participants to become stewards of their local environment. There will be MUD, so wear old clothes and shoes that can get wet.

              

Date: Sunday July 7th

Time: 10:30am-noon

Location: China Camp Village,

100 China Camp Village Rd., San Rafael.

Directions will be provided in an email response.

Age: Best for ages 6-10, accompanied by an adult.

 

Bring appropriate hiking clothes and shoes, snacks, sunscreen, a hat, and binoculars

(if you have them).

 July 13th Bird Walk

Welcome! Join our ongoing beginning birding class with naturalist Jerry Coe. No birding experience needed! This is a continuing class in which participants can gain skills in the art of birdwatching and identification. Everyone is welcome to join, even if you have not attended previous classes. Also, if you are an advanced birder, you are welcome to come and enjoy the outing.

 

During our stroll in China Camp, you will learn how to identify common birds in the field and how to effectively use binoculars and bird identification guides. We will explore birds of the oak woodland and marsh habitats, seeing  raptors, finches, juncos, and much more!

 

Jerry Coe is a naturalist with over eight years of intensive training in ornithological field identification. He spent 15 years as a volunteer in Great Basin National Park, Nevada doing Point Count Surveys using bird activities to assess the health of habitats. He has also guided outdoor expeditions all over the world.

Location: Turtleback Trailhead

Length: 1.5 miles

 

Please wear layers and good walking shoes. Bring water, snacks and binoculars. Optional items include: Daypack, scope, guide books, camera.

July 16th “Full Buck Moon”

China Camp State Park

 

Join us for a 4-mile round-trip hike to watch the radiant full moon cast glittering light over the bay. This will be a moderate hike with 400 ft in elevation gain.

Admission:  Free for members   

                        $5 non-members

Date: Tuesday, July  16th

Time:  7:45pm – 10:00pm

Please bring warm clothing, appropriate hiking gear, water, and a flashlight.

We will meet at 7:45pm sharp.

Help us with trail maintenance, including vegetation clearing, split rail fencing repair, bridge repair, and staging of gravel for future trail repair. There is something for everyone. Please note that trail work can be strenuous. Ages 16 and older welcome (minors must be accompanied by a legal guardian).
