Speaker Series: China Camp’s Irish Giant

Time-travel back nearly two centuries to meet “DonTimoteo” Murphy, one of the most colorful characters from China Camp’s past. Standing 6’4” tall and weighing some 350 pounds, Don Timoteo (born Timothy Murphy in his native Ireland) came to the U.S. in the early 1800s at the age of 28. Through Irish wit and luck, plus hard work, he developed respect and standing, and eventually earned the name of “Don Timoteo” in Mexican-controlled “Alta California.” The Irish Don was awarded one of the largest and most-prized land grants given by the Mexicans between 1824-1845, acreage that included San Pedro Ridge and the land we now call China Camp. Learn about this larger-than-life character in an entertaining program presented by Marcie Miller, Volunteer Program Director for the Marin History Museum.
