Geology Beach Stroll

When you pick up a pebble along the China Camp shoreline, you’re holding a piece of an epic story. Find out why on this leisurely shoreline walk with Nicole Myers, a geology instructor at Sonoma State University. Nicole will shed light on the Franciscan Assemblage, the landmass that encompasses the North Bay. She’ll also explain the volcanoes, faults, and massive forces of nature that created the landmass. And at the sandstone cliffs near China Camp Village, we’ll get a close-up look at metamorphic rocks and other geologic features.

 

Date: Saturday, August 31

Time: 9:15 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

Location: China Camp Village Museum

Difficulty: easy, 2-mile round trip walk; some gentle inclines

Cost: free for FOCC members; $5 donation appreciated for non-members

Age: 8 and older; ages under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult

Smoke Advisory: A series of intermittent pile burns are scheduled to begin at China Camp State Park on the McNears Service Road as early as Wednesday, January 22, 2025, or shortly thereafter, depending on weather conditions. All burning depends on weather and air quality conditions that are favorable for smoke dispersal. If conditions are not conducive for safe burning, the burns will be rescheduled.
