Speaker series: An artist’s inspiration

Catherine Wang McMahon is an artist who explores what connects people across family, place, and time. Using natural, plant-based materials and pigments made from soils and minerals, Catherine creates images that explore relationships between people, land, and history and how they are shaped by memory and passed down through generations.
Catherine’s recent work focuses on China Camp and Angel Island, touching on the histories of the environment, labor, migration, poetry, and government policy. Catherine aims to show how those histories are still present in the landscape today, shaping how we live and understand these places.
