NATURALIST BOOKCLUB: Other Minds

In this month’s fascinating book, Other Minds: The Octopus, the Sea, and the Deep Origins of Consciousness, author Peter Godfrey-Smith tells a bold new story of how subjective experience crept into being—how nature became aware of itself. The book’s story largely occurs in the ocean, where animals first appeared. Tracking the mind’s fitful development, and focusing on octopuses and other cephalopods, Godfrey-Smith ponders big questions: What kind of intelligence do these animals possess? And how did the octopus, a solitary creature with little social life, become so smart? We’ll discuss these questions and more as we share this engaging book.
