Junior Ranger King Tide Hike

January 11 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Make way, the king is coming to China Camp! Not King Charles, but a king tide! California’s coastal and bay waters will rise to extraordinary levels this winter, causing certain low-lying coastal and bay regions to flood. This phenomenon, deemed a king tide, temporarily transforms China Camp’s salt marsh into a watery mirror of the sky with the edges buzzing with wildlife. Small marsh residents like lizards, insects, and salt marsh harvest mice will seek higher ground to escape the rising tides, while birds of prey wait along the shoreline to snack on these fleeing creatures.

On this short, three-fourths mile round-trip excursion, Junior Rangers will have the opportunity to view the rising tides, watch the wildlife, and learn about the special role that the sun and the moon play in these fascinating annual occurrences.
