Birding Walk

August 17, 2024 @ 8:00 am - 10:00 am

Pileated Woodpecker (female)

Move over Ozzy Ozborne. Nature’s ultimate headbangers—woodpeckers—are taking center stage at China Camp this month. These dedicated rockers hammer out rhythms that echo throughout our oak woodlands. How can these super-cool birds pound their beaks into a tree without injury? Find out about woodpeckers’ amazing morphology during this month’s guided walk with bird expert Jerry Coe. He’ll share info about our resident headbangers, such as highly social acorn woodpeckers, colorful Northern flickers, and spectacular pileated woodpeckers.

All levels of birders welcome.

Smoke Advisory: A series of intermittent pile burns are scheduled to begin at China Camp State Park on the McNears Service Road as early as Wednesday, January 22, 2025, or shortly thereafter, depending on weather conditions. All burning depends on weather and air quality conditions that are favorable for smoke dispersal. If conditions are not conducive for safe burning, the burns will be rescheduled.
