Birding walk: migration madness

October 18, 2025 @ 8:00 am - 10:00 am

As autumn gets into full swing, so does the great fall migration. While you might spy strings of waterfowl and other species swirling overhead as they head south for winter, the majority of species don’t migrate during the day, but at night. In fact, research out of the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute shows that 90 percent of songbirds start their migratory flights within just a 69-minute window after dusk.

That can be good news for birdwatchers, since many migratory species need to settle down for the day to feed and conserve energy. At China Camp, migratory waterfowl, such as American widgeons and long-billed curlews, might be seen in our wetlands, while migratory warblers, vireos, and flycatchers might flit in the trees, shrubs, and meadows. On this month’s walk, we’ll be on the lookout for these and other species as they pass through the park. No birding experience required!
