For October’s selection, we’ll take a deep dive into David Mendell’s fascinating book, The Network of Life. Mindell, a senior researcher at U.C. Berkeley’s Museum of Vertebrate Zoology, presents a new perspective on evolution and its implications for life on Earth.

While evolution has traditionally been viewed as a branching family tree, our growing understanding of horizontal evolution—the sharing of genetic material across species—reveals that life is better understood as an interconnected network. As we increasingly reshape life and coevolve with technology, The Network of Life explores how understanding these connections can offer critical lessons for navigating the challenges ahead.
