SPEAKER SERIES, Bay shrimp: an important member of our bay’s food web
Bay shrimp are a vital part of the San Francisco Estuary, linking the food web by feeding on small invertebrates and serving as prey for fishes, crabs, birds, and marine mammals. The estuary is home to several native bay shrimp species, the most prominent being the California bay shrimp (Crangon franciscorum), and including three introduced grass shrimp species from Asia that now inhabit our brackish habitats. Over time, changes in habitat, freshwater flows, ocean conditions, regulations, and the introduction of non-native shrimp have reshaped both the fishery and the shrimp community.
Join Senior Environmental Scientist Kathryn Hieb from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife as she shares insights from decades of research on the ecology, history, and changing future of shrimp in the San Francisco Estuary.
