It will be a month since the September equinox, and the nights will have grown longer than the days, inviting the spirits of old to revisit us. Drawing from ancient European traditions, the annual rites of Halloween are near.

Here at China Camp State Park, Native American communities observed the movements and cycles of the full moon to mark the seasons, the passage of time, and cycles of renewal. Join us beneath the night sky as the ghostly “Hunter’s Moon” rises over the hills on the east side of San Francisco Bay, rekindling our connection to the rhythms of the moon, the land, and the changing seasons.

Arrive by 4:30 p.m. Our hike will start promptly at 4:45 p.m. to catch the moonrise. Space is limited; registration is required. Cancellation notified via email.

Difficulty: moderately strenuous (3½ -mile round-trip hike, with 500-foot ascent)
