September marks the beginning of the great southward migration. Birds traveling from as far away as the Arctic will be passing through our area on their journey. Between September and November, nearly 70 percent of North America’s bird species migrate south. Of the approximately 200 species that can be seen in Northern California, how many of the migrants can you identify?

Join us for a guided walk as we use our eyes and ears to find and identify the birds we encounter. Species we may see include osprey, white-tailed kites, five species of swallows, red-shouldered hawks, ash-throated flycatchers, Western bluebirds, and spotted towhees. With a little patience, and a bit of luck, we’re sure to discover some wonderful surprises.

Location: Turtle Back Trail trailhead

Difficulty: Easy; mostly flat 3/4 mile 

Cost: free to FOCC members; $5 donation appreciated for non-members

Ages: 10 and up; under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult
